Things to Consider Before You Panic
As a child, I couldn't wait for summer vacation, but as a parent, it's a bit depressing.
Children get about a month off, but for most parents, it feels like we only get about a week off for Obon, right?
During that time, the ordeal of preparing lunch for the kids, or making bento boxes every day if they go to after-school care, is added to the mix.
✅ Your Attributes and Workload
First, speaking for myself, I have a personality where I tend to get overwhelmed and panic easily.
So, I can easily predict that I will panic during this time when tasks increase.
When the workload is clearly going to increase, like during summer vacation, it becomes easier to cope if you know your own attributes well.
The strategy I took was to increase the children's independence so that I wouldn't have to do everything for them.
I still prepare lunch, but for example, I might make curry and tell them it's in the fridge, so they can heat it up and eat it themselves—letting them do what they can.
Thanks to that, I don't have to do everything from scratch; the kids can prepare their own meals, eat, and clean up, which helped me eliminate one major worry.
Besides that, I asked them to help with taking care of the cat and cleaning the bathroom, and by successfully delegating chores during summer vacation, I feel like we reached a win-win situation.
✅ Deciding on a Stance
The fact that I was raising the kids on my own played a huge role in me being able to adopt this mindset.
My wife was away for work and not at home, so I settled into this stance.
It is true that I had long believed the two major elements of raising children were to
encourage independence
and boost self-esteem,
so that also helped me adopt this stance.
But once you decide on your own stance like this, it actually becomes quite easy to manage yourself.
I made sure that if I prepared lunch to a certain extent, the children could handle the rest themselves.
Also, when I was worried, I felt at ease because I had given the children smartphones from a young age, so I could contact them directly.
I felt that getting frustrated and taking it out on the children wasn't the right way to go.
✅ Summary
When raising children, it is easy to end up focusing entirely on them.
I also went through a period where that was painful and difficult for me.
However, I realized that if I continued like this, I would break down again.
So, I learned from experience that if I first remember to take care of myself, things end up working out well.
Summer vacation is a learning experience for children, but it is also a learning experience for adults, isn't it?
