The Theory That Even Common Sense Was Decided by Someone
Things that are familiar habits to us now, such as clapping our hands at a shrine, I think were actually started by someone in ancient times.
Although we sometimes forget, the things we take for granted today might have been started by people in the past based on their own thoughts or feelings.
✅ Started by someone in ancient times
Walking through the torii gate of a shrine and stepping on the gravel of the approach.
Purifying your hands at the water pavilion and clapping your hands in front of the offering box. This series of actions is all too familiar to Japanese people.
However, I want you to stop and think for a moment. Who on earth started this act of 'kashide' (clapping hands)?
In ancient times, before Shinto was systematized, people must have offered prayers to nature, which they held in awe.
Perhaps one day, a person clapped their hands together, filled with gratitude and wishes for the gods.
Believing that the sound would reach the gods, or perhaps to calm their own hearts.
✅ If it lasts a long time, it becomes a tradition
That act spread to the people around them and eventually became established as a 'method of offering prayers to the gods'.
The way of clapping hands, which may have differed from person to person at first, might have been refined over time into the current form of 'kashide'.
The habits, culture, and social rules that we take for granted.
Many of them were started by someone long, long ago.
For example, in Japan, we put our hands together and say 'itadakimasu' before a meal.
This is a beautiful habit that expresses gratitude for receiving life, but this, too, was started by someone.
Perhaps, in the distant past, in an era when food was scarce, someone faced with a precious meal put their hands together with a feeling of gratitude.
Or, the colors of traffic lights.
Why is red 'stop' and green 'go'? There is a proper reason for this as well.
Although there are various theories, the theory that it originated from the colors of ship navigation lights is prominent.
Red was highly visible even from a distance and was used as a color to signal danger.
On the other hand, blue (green) was considered a color that meant safety.
In this way, the 'common sense' around us is packed with history, culture, and the wisdom of our predecessors.
Things that last a long time become traditions.
Habits and cultures that have been passed down through the ages are deeply rooted in our lives.
It can be said that they play an important role in forming our identity.
✅ Summary
However, tradition is by no means fixed.
It also has the flexibility to change with the times. For example, how we spend New Year's.
In the past, it was common for families to spend it together at home, but nowadays, there are diverse ways to spend it, such as going on trips or having parties with friends.
Tradition is both a legacy of the past and a bridge to the future. We live on top of the 'common sense' that our predecessors have built.
Without forgetting that, we need to pass it on to the future while holding a feeling of gratitude.
And we ourselves can also create new 'common sense'.
Even small things are fine. Doing something useful for someone, taking action to make society better. That accumulation will shape the 'common sense' of the future.
Questioning 'common sense', and looking at the history, culture, and the thoughts of our predecessors behind it.
That will be a hint for us to broaden our own perspectives and live a richer life.
And, creating new 'common sense' for the future.
That might be a mission imposed upon us.
