note de Noël Letter | Day 27 'Warming Hands'

Today is my daughter's 3rd birthday Shichi-Go-San celebration.
She was a little nervous about the unfamiliar photo shoot,
but when she licked a candy, she smiled.
Every time the sweetness spread in her mouth, her tense shoulders relaxed,
and in sync with the photographer's "Great!"
her hands gradually turned into "warming hands."
While wiping her sticky, sweet fingertips with a handkerchief,
I squeezed her small hands and said, "You did a great job."
With that warmth, it was my turn to feel lighter.

Wrapping her in a towel after a bath,
drying her hair, and patting her back.
The hand that strokes her while saying, "You worked hard today too,"
softens my own heart before it softens hers.

When you warm something, you become warm yourself.
The more you give, the more it grows.

Hands that turn pages, hands that set the table,
hands that say goodnight—all of them are hands that carry light.

May a quiet warmth gently dwell within.
Stay warm tonight (or tomorrow), too.
