note de Noël Letter | Day 14 "Coloring"

The leaves on the trees visible from the balcony
are changing color little by little.

The green from yesterday
is slightly closer to orange today,
and every time I notice that change,
a gentle ripple stirs deep within my chest.

I try lining up the small fallen leaves
my daughter picked up on the table.
Red, yellow, brown, orange—
no two colors are the same.

When asked, "Which color do you like, Mama?"
I hesitate for a moment before answering.
"All of them. They are all beautiful, aren't they?"

Our daily lives
are surely colored in just this way.
They aren't all bright colors,
but I've come to feel that they are fine just as they are.

Failures, smiles, and sighs
all mix together to create the picture of "now."
I hope the days when I can think of that as beautiful
will increase little by little.
