note de Noël Letter | Day 17 "Cherish"

The light of a winter morning is somehow poignant.
That single ray spilling through the gap in the curtains
is softly caught by my daughter's hair.

Warm light falls upon her cheeks,
and the shadows of her eyelashes tremble gently.
In that moment, a sudden ache stirs deep in my chest.
――Why is it that I find even such small moments
so precious?

The days pass by in the blink of an eye,
like sand slipping through one's fingers.
Her sleeping face, her laughter,
they seem exactly the same as yesterday,
yet they are surely drifting away, little by little.

That is precisely why
I want to embrace the "now."
The steaming mug,
the tiny stain on the corner of a picture book,
the warmth of a small hand held tight.
All of it is precious.

The world is always a little cold,
yet light shines on every morning.
To "cherish" means
to gently stroke the present,
precisely because we know it will be lost.
