Discomfort with the Endless Game of Scarcity
I hope this article reaches those who feel pressured or uncomfortable when told that they "should want more," and who are feeling distressed by it.
May this article reach those who are feeling distressed.
Let's envision more ideals.
Let's remove more limitations.
Let's achieve even bigger dreams.
Have you ever felt distressed
by words like these?
In truth, I feel happiness
in my current life as well.
A peaceful morning.
Time spent with people who make me feel secure.
A night where I can sleep soundly.
However,
"That is just maintaining the status quo."
"You must not affirm the current situation."
"You are trying to stay in your comfort zone."
"You should be able to want more."
These words, which are meant to be encouraging, can sometimes
become words that lead you to doubt
your own feelings.
"Am I afraid of growth?"
"Are my dreams too small?"
You might fall into a loop of self-questioning.
Even when I try to envision my ideal future,
for some reason, the words don't come out.
Even when I look at photos of luxury hotels,
rather than thinking "I want to stay here!"
I find myself thinking about "what kind of feelings I would have while spending time there."
Even though it's time to list "things I want,"
before I know it,
"what kind of feelings I am experiencing"
is where my imagination expands.
With that kind of self,
I start to feel a bit of distance,
wondering, "Am I not wanting things properly?"
But perhaps,
it's not that your "desires are small,"
it might just be that the "type of desire is different."
In this world,
there are people who use
"what they want to obtain" as their driving force.
The ideal home.
The ideal way of working.
The ideal lifestyle.
There is nothing wrong with that.
However, that is not everything.
There are also people who value
'who they want to be'.
Being able to find joy,
wherever you are.
Being able to be yourself,
without trying too hard to fit in with others.
Being able to savor the 'here and now'.
Such wishes are often
hard to see, difficult to quantify,
and not something you find lined up on store shelves,
are they?
So, sometimes
you are misunderstood as 'someone without desires'.
Because it tends to be a sensory and abstract topic,
I think you often feel that you are not understood.
But this sense of wanting to cherish
quiet happiness
is not a weakness.
It does not mean you haven't thought about things concretely.
Rather,
without being swallowed by the sense of scarcity of 'more and more',
it might be the strength of
constantly exploring 'what is comfortable for oneself'.
If you are currently feeling,
"I need to want more,"
"I need to change,"
"I'm not good enough as I am,"
and you are tired of that anxiety,
why not stop thinking about an 'ideal future' for a moment,
and instead think about an 'ideal day today'?
How do you want to feel today?
What kind of comfort do you want to experience?
What kind of person do you want to be?
Gently and quietly wishing for the comfort of today,
and for days you'll want to experience again,
is what leads to an ideal future.
I think it's perfectly fine to envision it that way.
Until next time.
See you later.
