Is a 'Personal Core' Something That Never Wavers?
This time, I am writing for those who:
・Overthink the question, 'What is my true self?'
・Are a little tired of feeling like they 'need to be better.'
・Want to take a proper look at their own feelings once again.
I am writing this for people like you.
'It is important to have a personal core.'
'Let's find our true selves.'
These are words I used to say myself.
But every time I see these words,
every time I encounter them,
・Unwavering strength
・A person with a solid foundation
・A person who never gets lost
I sometimes end up imagining things like that.
'But, are people really that complete...?'
Perhaps that question has been following me around.
We can be swayed by our interactions with others.
Depending on the environment or our position,
our way of thinking can change.
A post someone made that we clicked on casually,
or news flowing in from TV, radio, or the internet.
The content of conversations with family and friends,
or the atmosphere at work.
As we encounter various things every day,
our feelings change little by little.
In fact, you could say that wavering is more natural.
So,
'Let's have a personal core,'
'Let's grow more,'
when we keep encountering words like these,
'I am not enough as I am right now.'
Sometimes, we end up carrying that premise
without even realizing it.
More than the past, the present.
More than the present, the future.
To be richer.
To be freer.
To get closer to the ideal.
Of course, that feeling of wanting to look forward
is wonderful.
I have no intention of denying that.
However,
I feel like an increasing number of people are getting tired
of running while constantly feeling a sense of 'lack' somewhere.
I am surely one of them, too.
'Still not enough'
'I should be able to do more'
'I have to change more'
If you keep thinking like that,
you start to feel like you are living
while denying the 'self who is here right now'.
Besides,
'Let's find our true selves'
'Let's reclaim our original selves'
Even with these words,
there was something that bothered me somewhere.
'Reclaim'—
was it stolen by someone...? I wondered.
I do understand what this context is trying to convey, though.
While trying to fit in with those around us,
we might have left our senses behind.
We might have kept things going by suppressing them and enduring.
While leaning toward 'how things should be,'
we lose sight of our true feelings.
In that sense,
I think it is close to the feeling of 'returning to oneself'.
But I think when we are drawn to these words,
it is also when we are bound by 'how things should be'
and are feeling distressed.
And,
when you start to feel that you have to reach that point,
that you have to find it,
it can become a little painful.
Therefore,
rather than 'finding your true self',
'What kind of things do I like?'
'When do I feel comfortable?'
'Conversely, what makes me feel distressed?'
In that way,
I think the feeling of taking an interest in yourself
is what is important.
For example,
'Oh, I like the time when I could laugh with peace of mind.'
'I like places where I can look at the sky while listening to the song of the wind.'
'I get tired when I force myself to put on a fake smile.'
Like that.
To use an analogy,
it's like when you are observing someone you love or a favorite idol.
That feeling isn't about evaluation,
it's just the sensation of watching with interest.
Try looking at yourself in that same way,
as if you are watching over yourself from a slightly higher perspective.
Of course, you don't want to just keep looking back
at the past or your current feelings.
People change,
and because of the things you will encounter from now on,
what you 'like' and what feels 'comfortable' will change little by little.
That is precisely why,
I think observing your current feelings
is also important for choosing your future.
Thinking about what kind of future you want to realize
is fine, but,
what kind of feelings do you want to spend your time with?
What do you want to cherish?
When does your heart feel at ease?
In what kind of place is it easier to breathe?
If you know those things,
you won't have to conform to 'someone else's ideal,'
and it becomes easier to naturally choose based on 'being yourself.'
That is what I feel.
Rather than continuing to search for your 'true self,'
try accepting the 'feelings of the self that is here right now'
at their exact temperature.
Just doing that makes it a little easier to breathe.
Don't you feel that way?
In order to move toward the future,
do not treat the present carelessly.
Lately, I have been cherishing that feeling.
Thank you for reading this article
