How People Change Through 'Conviction and Alignment'
"Let's envision the future."
This is a phrase that often comes up in coaching.
To imagine your ideal self and move toward it. I think this is a very natural and convincing way of thinking.
However, I have always had a slightly different feeling about it.
Being guided by the future is fine. But being carried along by it feels a bit different.
When I was thinking about that sense of discomfort, I remembered a plastic model kit I built a long time ago.
▶ The reason I wanted to choose a plastic model kit over a finished product
I once bought a plastic model kit a long time ago.
It was the type where you open the box, take out the parts, remove them from the frames one by one, assemble them, and finally paint them.
When I actually tried it, it was much harder than I had imagined. And it took more time than I had expected, too.
I made mistakes along the way, and there were parts that didn't fit together well.
Compared to the finished product shown in the showcase or on the package, it looked incredibly clumsy.
But, it was so much fun.
More than obtaining the finished product,
the act of 'making it with my own hands'
the process and the experience,
and the final result itself,
gave me a sense of fulfillment.
When I was buying the plastic model kit,
a friend actually
told me, 'You should just buy the finished product.'
That was surely because when I picked up the box,
I had said,
'I really love this car!'
And because they knew
that I wasn't very dexterous. Haha
So, it was surely the right advice.
You get it sooner,
you can choose a perfect one,
you can display it immediately,
and there is no worry about failure.
But if I had done that,
I think it would have been a completely different experience.
What I wanted at that time
was not the 'finished product',
but the process of building the plastic model.
This event
happened about 20 years ago.
The reason I remembered it now
is because I was thinking again
about the 'structure' of coaching.
▶ Understanding the Structure of Coaching and How to Proceed
In coaching, we often hear phrases like:
・Let's envision the future
・Let's increase the sense of reality
・Let's break through the status quo
These words come up frequently.
By using the brain's RAS mechanism, we create an environment where the brain automatically gathers the information needed for an ideal future.
Because time is limited.
Because if you're going to change, it's better to do it sooner.
Because the future can be brought forward.
It is a very logical way of thinking,
and none of it is wrong.
However, I had a slightly different feeling inside.
Being guided by the future is fine.
But being carried there feels a bit off.
I wanted to have the feeling of approaching it myself.
That's the kind of feeling.
Rather than reaching the future like riding an elevator,
I think I wanted to walk up the stairs,
checking my own footing as I went.
(Though, I do have a tiny bit of a desire to ride an escalator... sometimes, haha)
Reflecting on that, I arrived at the thought that it's similar to the feeling I had when building plastic models.
Even when you can see the finished form,
how you approach it matters.
The tactile experience of the process in between was important.
Touching the parts.
Making a few mistakes.
Starting over.
Moving forward with conviction.
That time itself was the 'meaning'.
Therefore,
change might be the same.
I like coffee,
and buying it
brewed at a cafe or convenience store
is delicious, so I like that too, but
grinding the beans myself with a mill,
and brewing it with boiled water.
I really love
that time when the aroma spreads.
I feel that the sense of change
is similar to that.
▶ You can choose your route of change
As for the triggers that make people change,
There are people who envision a goal and clarify their destination. People who move based on the sense of reality on the goal side. People who feel uncomfortable with the status quo and break through it.
Stories about these kinds of people often come up, don't they?
But I don't think those are the only
triggers for people to change.
There are people who envision a goal and move forward.
There are people who move based on conviction.
There are people who can move forward because they have a sense of security.
There are also people who change because the meaning connects.
And I think I am probably
someone who starts moving
from a 'sense of alignment'.
A sense of alignment is,
・This is good
・I can move forward with this
・I can be convinced by this
・I can feel that I am choosing this myself
that kind of feeling.
It is not about speed, but
the depth of conviction and the suppleness of one's core.
I realized that I value those things.
If you want to move toward a goal but
feel like you are not making good progress,
feel like you cannot quite visualize the reality of it,
or feel like the method is not right for you,
even if you have such a sense of discomfort,
it does not mean you 'cannot change'.
It might just be that your 'way of changing' is different.
Where do you feel the texture of 'change'?
If you observe that,
I think you will surely see
how you engage with change and how you move forward.
Please tell me someday about the texture of change
that you hold dear.
Well then, until next time.
