The Resolution of "Abundance"
In this article,
I write about how my interpretation of the word "abundance"
has changed within me.
I would be happy if this is read by those who are unsure about the definition of abundance,
or those who feel a change in their values.
What is "abundance," anyway?
When I think about it again, "abundance" is abstract.
I think it is a word that surprisingly doesn't have a clear answer.
Having money.
Having free time.
Being able to spend time with people you love.
It is completely different for everyone.
It is a word that changes depending on one's interpretation.
So this time,
I don't want to write an answer that says
"this is what abundance is."
I want to try to pull together
what I myself feel abundance is right now.
Looking back at my past self,
I think I wanted "quantity."
A lot of knowledge, a lot of experience, a lot of income.
Big dreams, flashy goals.
The more I had of those things,
the more I felt I was getting closer to "abundance."
But, at some point,
that feeling started to change little by little.
For example, food.
It might be because I've gotten older,
but I can no longer eat the same amount I did during my growth spurt.
But I want to eat things that make me think, "This is delicious."
I feel that desire has actually become stronger.
Rather than quantity, the satisfaction of a single bite.
And then, my focus on things.
I used to try to adopt new clothes
or shoes every season immediately.
It wasn't that I was concerned with trends, but
I wanted to create a state where I could choose whatever I wanted based on my mood that day.
I thought I was buying things I liked,
but I think I often just bought whatever caught my eye based solely on emotion
(impulse buying, that is).
However, as things began to overflow,
I started to wonder,
'What are the things I really want to cherish?'
The trigger was a major earthquake.
But it was a turning point.
From around that time, I began to think about the craftsmanship, the development stories,
and the background of those products.
Whether I could empathize with them, or whether I personally wanted to cherish them,
and wanted to nurture them together—
I started to value that kind of attention to detail
for the things close to me.
Perhaps this is
a shift in affluence from 'quantity' to 'quality',
or rather,
it might be that theresolutionwith which I perceive affluence
has changed.
Before, I tried to feel affluent
by obtaining everything.
But now,
I am trying to find affluence
in the details of what is right in front of me.
A bite that makes you smile because it's delicious.
Tools that fit well in your hand. The scenery spreading outside the window.
There is a quietly spreading sense of satisfaction in such things.
That is how I think about it.
Perhaps it will change again as I get a little older,
or as I meet more people.
For you,
what is the 'affluence' you feel right now?
If you'd like, please tell me in secret.
See you again.
