If the 'fear' disappears, will I be able to move forward...?
"If only the fear were gone, I could move forward."
Have you ever felt that way?
What if I fail?
What if I'm wrong?
What if someone thinks it's strange?
What if I can't do it properly?
Even though your curiosity is stirring,
saying you want to try or are a little interested,
the fear just outweighs it,
and you stop yourself along with those feelings.
So,
you look for ways to stop being afraid.
You try to build more confidence.
"If I have this, it will definitely be okay."
You try to reach a state where you can think that.
I used to do that, too.
I would be so cautious
that I might even end up breaking the stone bridge I was tapping.
I would shift things slightly and check each time.
And if I found a new point of concern,
I would check again.
I did that over and over,
again and again.
But,
no matter how much I prepared,
the day when the fear would completely disappear
never really seemed to come.
Are you, too,
patiently waiting for the day when the fear disappears?
But I would like you to think back for a moment.
When you were able to start moving little by little,
wasn't it often the case that it wasn't 'after the fear had vanished,' but 'after you had taken a small step while still holding onto the fear'?
Don't you thinkthat was often the case?
For example,
I tried putting my hazy feelings into words,
just a little bit.
I tried writing them down and showing them to someone.
I tried posting them on social media.
Those kinds of moments.
It was a little scary.
But the fact that I 'tried it'
made me feel just a little bit clearer.
“Huh? It was a little scary, but
maybe I can do it if it's just a tiny bit.”
In that way,
the fact that I was able to 'move forward while taking my fear along with me'
can become an encouragement to myself,
or give me the push I need to take the next step.
Perhaps,
this accumulation of sensations
is what we might call 'confidence'.
So,
it's okay not to try to make the fear disappear completely.
Surely, fear is not something
to be erased or overcome.
As long as we live, it's inseparable from us.
Perhaps it's enough to just find
a way to 'live with' that fear.
For example,
you could try viewing the things you're afraid of
as little 'challenges'.
You could try taking it as,
“Lucky me,
I've found an area that's worth working on.”
Then,
the shadow of the fear
may start to fade.
Even while still afraid.
Even while still feeling lost.
Try moving forward while taking that 'slight curiosity' along with you.
Maybe that is enough.
Well then, until next time.
