It is normal for people in their 20s to have no 'Will'
Hello. I am Rikuto Doda, a career strategy consultant.
After entering the workforce through job hunting, you will suddenly find yourself asked more often, "What is your Will (what you want to do)?" However, only a handful of people have a strong sense of mission or entrepreneurial spirit from their student days.
Many people start their careers in a state of "not knowing what I really want to do," but to conclude, that is perfectly fine.
This is because not having a "Will" is actually nothing more than having few "Cans" (things you can do) yet. It is difficult for people to burn with passion for something they cannot do at all.
The importance of 'Can' considered from the essence of work
Let's take a moment here to look back at the definition of work.
Work is
"to discover problems for others, set appropriate tasks, and lead them to solutions. Then, to provide added value and receive compensation in return."
In your 20s, this "ability to solve" = "Can" is overwhelmingly lacking. Worrying about what you want to do at a stage where you have no means to solve problems is like discussing how to maneuver on a battlefield without holding a weapon.
The amount of 'Must' creates 'Can' and gives birth to 'Will'
So, how can you increase your "Can"?
The answer is extremely simple. It is to complete an overwhelming amount of "Must" (things you should do/roles) in front of you.
1. First, complete a large amount of "Must" tasks, even if it's unglamorous work.
2. As you handle the volume, the quality improves, and you will produce results that are praised by those around you (supervisors and clients).
3. Once you produce results, your "Can" (things you can do) increases, and work becomes fun.
4. As an extension of that, you will see a "Will" (what you want to do) that you can finally be confident about.
This cycle is the royal road to career formation.
Develop the habit of 'thinking' before worrying
The time spent worrying that "I have nothing I want to do" is a waste. Instead, please devote your energy to thinking about "how I can complete the Must in front of me more efficiently and with higher quality."
Your 20s are a precious period for turning Must into Can. First, face the work in front of you thoroughly until you reach the level where your supervisor says, "I'm glad I left this to you." That accumulation should lead you to a place overflowing with things you want to do in the future.
