I decided to stop 'trying so hard'.
Thank you for visiting. I am a science-major mom raising a two-and-a-half-year-old son who doesn't talk yet and a three-month-old daughter.
The other day, while watching a YouTube video recommended by someone who commented on my blog, the speaker said, "let's stop trying so hard".
Ah, I thought, "I read that in a book the other day too." When you see a message over and over like this, it's a sign that you should follow it.
So, today I would like to write down my thoughts on "stopping trying so hard" as they come to me.
The reason why you should stop "trying so hard"
The explanation for why it's better to stop "trying so hard" that resonates most with me was in a book called "Scientific Way to Rewrite Your Subconscious Mind".
According to this book, you should stop "trying so hard" because the act of trying so hard leads to self-deprecation.
"Trying so hard" (ganbaru) is also said to mean "asserting one's ego" (ga o haru). Asserting one's ego is the act of comparing yourself to others and appealing to your own greatness or superiority by saying, "Look at me, look at me." (omitted) The fear that "if I don't do this, I won't be recognized" is what makes you "try so hard" by saying "look at me." In other words, that kind of "trying-so-hard consciousness" automatically leads to "self-deprecation."
By the way, what is recommended instead of "trying so hard" is "doing your best". Since there is no consciousness of self-deprecation in that, it usually works out well.
Trying so hard while saying "I'll do my best"
About a month after reading this book, just as I was consciously spending my time using the phrase "I'll do my best," I received this comment:
"Isn't it possible that you, as a science-major mom, were pushing yourself too hard to just 'look forward' without even knowing your own capacity?"
I realized, maybe I was trying to push myself while saying I would "do my best".
Trying so hard or pushing yourself is an expression of the belief that "the current me is not good enough."
That's why it feels a little exhausting, and when you suddenly notice it, you are out of energy. Maybe that's where I am now.
I will write about what I did after this realization another day.
Anyway, today is my declaration that "I've stopped trying so hard!" 😉
I hope you'll be kind to me.
