🎀 Why You Can't Keep Up with English Learning: The Surprising Reason for Being a Quitter
I thought, 'I'm going to study English!' but I couldn't keep it up...
I thought, 'This time I won't end up as a quitter!' but...
I guess I'm just someone who gets bored with everything I do...
Don't you think things like that?
Being a quitter
For anyone who wants to work hard at learning English,
isn't that the first wall you hit?
If,
you think that not being able to continue learning English is
'just the way my personality is,'
then wait a second.
That might just be,
because you're doing it the wrong way.
Continuing to learn English is
It's not about willpower or grit.
It's just about whether you know the system to keep going.
I think I'll talk about that today.
Oh, excuse me for not introducing myself.
This is who I am.
The real reason for being a quitter
The human brain has a nature of trying to maintain the status quo,
so it hates change.
✔When starting something new
✔New environments
✔New habits
When you try to incorporate these things,
your brain will always react.
The reason why is
because the brain prefersstability and security.
Therefore,
If you've always thought, 'I'm a quitter because of my personality!'
it's time to rethink that.
It's okay.
It's not your fault.
It's because of how the brain works.
To keep learning English
So, what should you do to start something new?
I believe there are two key points.
The first is
don't try to do something big right away.
The second is
just try it for 21 days for now.
Let's look at them one by one.
For the first one,
the idea of 'not doing something big right away,'
have you ever experienced this?
'I'm going to start learning English!'
"10 pages of workbooks a day!"
"30 minutes of listening a day!"
No, no, that's way too much.
You're trying too hard. ^^;
For now,
5 minutes a day is fine.
I'm studying Korean right now, and I'm using an app called Duolingo.
I decided in the initial settings that I would only do it for 5 minutes.
Apparently, I've kept it up for 60 days now!
Woohoo!
The second one is
"Just try it for 21 days"
and
this is
based on the Incubate Rule (the 21-day rule),
"It takes people 21 days to make a new habit."
or so it seems.
There are individual differences,
and it seems there are pros and cons,
but from my own experience, if I can do it for 21 days,
I feel like I can keep doing most things as they are.
For those of you who are still quitters
Even if you lower the bar this much
Some of you might still be thinking,
"I still end up quitting after three days!"
So from here on out,
I'm going to talk about something important to ensure you don't become a quitter, or let yourself become one! (No pressure!)
First of all,
Why do you even want to study English in the first place?
That's the question.
Even though we just say "English"
✔ Is it business English?
✔ Is it English for certification exams?
✔ Is it English for daily conversation?
There are so many kinds, right?
Business English and daily conversational English
have different content to learn.
This might seem obvious, but
I think it's something people who are about to start learning English often misunderstand.
"I'm just flipping through a phrasebook every day"
versus
"I want to pass this exam, so I'm going to finish this vocabulary book!"
I hope you can see that
even if it's the same five minutes a day, the results will be different.
So, let's definitely set a goal.
Why do you want to study English?
What do you want to do once you can speak English?
Once you've firmly decided on this, all that's left is to start running, so it'll be easy. ^^
Also,
for those of you who have a goal but still feel lazy,
you know who you are!
It's a good idea to try a reward-based style.
After working hard for 5 minutes a day
drink a delicious coffee
or
eat just one of those sweets you received
or something like that.
The brain loves "joy" and "feeling good."
That's why the brain tries to repeat the same action to experience that feeling again.
Giving yourself a reward helps boost the habits needed to achieve your goals.
Isn't that great? ^ ^
Did you feel like you could try a little harder?
To summarize
✔Being a quitter is due to how the brain works
✔Keep the hurdle for starting extremely low
✔Just try it for 21 days
is what it means.
Next up,
I'm thinking of writing about the practice method that drastically improved my listening and reading skills.
Is anyone interested?
By the way, this is a practice method that I still felt was effective even after passing the Eiken Grade 1 exam.
