Ao-Bura Literature Club | In Search of the Lost Rabbit
The rabbit ran away.
A pure white rabbit, holding Misa's precious key in its mouth, ran off at full speed.
Misa chased after it in a panic. But the rabbit was fast.
It was already about to cross the bridge visible in the distance. But right before Misa reached the foot of the bridge, the bridge collapsed, and it fell into the deep valley along with the rabbit.
"Ah, wait!" Misa screamed. The red ribbon tied to the key flickered for a moment and then vanished along with the pure white rabbit.
"Ah!" Misa woke up to the sound of her own scream. It was a rare day off, and she must have fallen asleep after lunch. Was it just a dream? But the scene felt so vivid. The room felt somewhat humid and stifling. The key was right there by her pillow. It had a cute rabbit keychain attached to it. It was something he had bought for her at a service area on their way back from visiting his parents' home.
Feeling relieved, she took a shower, and it was when she turned on the TV while drying her hair.
Multi-vehicle accident on the Tohoku Expressway
The ticker flashed before her eyes.
What did you say? His car, which he had taken to go home for an urgent matter this morning, should be driving on the Tohoku Expressway right about now... No way, it can't be. A shudder ran through her.
Driven by fear, Misa stood frozen with the remote in her hand as a familiar blue car body caught her eye. The heavily crushed driver's seat, the unmistakable license plate.
How could this... How could something like this happen?
She doesn't remember much after that. Many people came and went, and many words of comfort were offered.
"You have a child, so you have to stay strong," said a neighbor she didn't even know, offering empty words of comfort.
(I don't even have any children...)
For some reason, I found myself laughing at the words that echoed only with emptiness, and I felt no anger.
More than that, the various reminiscences and words of condolence stung even more.
Leave me alone!
Don't say anything!
Don't go out of your way to voice the very thing I find most painful!
Misa endured such anger and pain in silence.
Eventually, the tide receded, and this time, an unbearable silence arrived.
And, by the time she had finished tidying up this and that, the wall clock stopped for no reason.
It was as if it were telling her, "The time here has come to an end."
She could no longer stay here.
She would leave this place.
As she thought, the rabbit of happiness had run away at that time.
However, she wanted to get that rabbit back into her hands once more.
She wanted to reclaim that key with the red ribbon back into her heart.
In search of that lost rabbit, Misa set out on a journey.
