アメリカ　北西部の山岳地帯に建つ小さな建物に
ある休日の朝、数台の車が静かに集結した。

ここは、アメリカのプレッパー組織「アンカー・ポイント」の拠点
グレイ・リッジ農場だ。

プレッパー（Prepper  生存準備者）とは核攻撃まで想定した社会の崩壊の中で生き残る準備を、進める人々の事だ。
アメリカでは数百万人規模で存在すると言われる。
今日ここに集まったのは、そんな中でも特に本格派の面々であった。

あたりは、一見のどかな農村だが、この建物はつる草に覆われた防弾壁に囲まれ、周辺には、高感度センサーが張り巡らされている。

少しおくれて、新メンバーとなる外科医アーサーの車が、内科医の妻　サエコを伴って到着した。待ち望んでいた医療チームである。

「やあ、ようこそ」
穏やかな笑みを浮かべて出迎えたのは、組織のリーダー　サミュエル・ミラーだ。

軽くジャケットを着こなした、温厚な雰囲気の年配男性である。
彼は、元システムエンジニアで、今は、この一帯の農場経営者でもあった。

組織内では「アーキビスト_記録保管者」の名を持つが　
大抵の者は、親しみを込めて「アーキー」と呼ぶ。

今日は、「アンカー・ポイント」の「定例集会」だった。
アーサー夫妻が、大きな食堂に集まったメンバーに紹介された後
全員そろって早めの昼食になった。

取り仕切っているのは、サミュエル・ミラーの妻アンナと、娘のルゥシィだ。リーダーの一家は、ここを生活の拠点にしている。

この日　集まったのは

太陽光パネル、蓄電池、自家発電機の保守など

各種の専門家たちが、それぞれの知識を持ち寄って問題を検討し、訓練を通じて親睦を深める。

昼食後、元特殊部隊のダンカンは

高校教師　  エミリー達　数人を引き連れて、裏庭での射撃訓練に向かう。

一方、リーダーのサミュエル・ミラーは
初めてここを訪れた、医師のアーサー夫妻を、地下に案内した。

この建物は地下4階まで続き

地下１階は　食糧をメインとすると巨大な貯蔵庫
地下２階は　医療部門　医療機器や　医薬品
地下３階は　図書室
地下４階が　メンバーの居住区　　　となっていた。

順に案内され、図書室に入ったアーサーは、選び抜かれたその蔵書に、感嘆の声を上げた。
「よく、これ程の書物を！」

サエコも、「文学書まで、こんなにそろってるなんて」と驚きを隠せない。

リーダーの「アーキビスト_記録保管者」は言う。

「私達は、ムダかも知れない余分な事に人生を賭けている、人類の予備集団という訳だ。
ここにある全ての物と仕組みが、可視化されたリダンダンシー　という事になるだろう。

もし、私たちの誰も生き残れなくとも、
他に生き延びた者が、ここに集めた書物を発見してくれたなら
私は満足だ」

そして、その頃　
サミュエル・ミラーの家族　アンナやルゥシィと共に、近くの畑に、ジャガイモの収穫に向かった子供たちは、大はしゃぎだった。普段は、触れることのない黒々とした土の匂いや、掘り上げた芋の重さに驚いている。

その時、一人の男の子が言った。「ねえ、いざって時は、うちのおばあちゃんも、ここに来るんだよね？」

アンナは、とっさの返事に窮した。
その答えは既に出ている。
だが、今それを口にするわけにはゆかなかった。

それならば、核攻撃や大規模な自然災害で
既存の社会システムが消滅する可能性がある中で
生き残りを目指すプレッパー集団は、
究極のバックアップ、可視化されたリダンダンシーと言えるのではないか。

それは、国家が意図的に設計したものではなくても
社会状況から自然発生した、人類が絶滅しないための設計と解釈して
上記の物語を創作しました。

On a holiday morning, several cars quietly gathered at a small building standing in the mountainous region of the American Northwest.

This is Gray Ridge Farm, the base of the American prepper organization 'Anchor Point'.
Preppers are people who prepare to survive the collapse of society, even anticipating a nuclear attack. It is said that there are millions of them in the United States. Those who gathered here today were among the most serious of them all.

Emily, a high school teacher and Edward's wife,
and their two children, a son and daughter around 10 years old.
Various experts bring their respective knowledge to examine problems and deepen their friendships through training.

After lunch, Duncan, the former special forces operative, took George the mechanic, Emily the high school teacher, and a few others to the backyard for shooting practice.


Meanwhile, the leader, Samuel Miller,
guided the Arthur couple, doctors who were visiting for the first time, into the underground.
This building extended down to the fourth basement level.
The first basement level was a massive storage area primarily for food,
the second basement level was the medical department with medical equipment and pharmaceuticals,
the third basement level was the library,
and the fourth basement level served as the living quarters for the members.
Guided in order, Arthur entered the library and let out a voice of admiration at the carefully selected collection.
"To think you have so many books!"
Saeko also could not hide her surprise, saying, "I can't believe you even have this many literary works."
The leader, the 'Archivist,' said,

"We are, in a sense, a reserve group for humanity, betting our lives on things that might be considered useless or redundant.
Everything and every mechanism here could be called visualized redundancy.
Even if none of us survive,
if others who have survived discover the books collected here,
I will be satisfied."
And around that time,
the children, along with Samuel Miller's family, Anna and Lucy, were having a great time heading to a nearby field to harvest potatoes. They were surprised by the smell of the dark soil they usually never touch and the weight of the potatoes they dug up.
At that moment, one of the boys said, "Hey, when the time comes, my grandma will come here too, right?"
Anna struggled to find an immediate answer.
The answer had already been decided.
