山の暮らしの物語2　シイタケを収穫する

山の斜面に沿って組み立てられた *榾木(ほだぎ)に、秋の木洩れ日がさしている。
ゆきちゃんは、その上をヒョイヒョイと登りながら、あちこちに生えたしいたけを採っては、腰につけた小さなカゴに放り込む。

「大したもんや、猿の子ぉ　みたいやのう」
近くの沢で水を汲んで来た父さんが、感心して見上げている。


「ほんまに　サルより役に立つねぇ」
いっしょにしいたけを採っていた母さんも笑った。猿に失礼だ、いやいや　ゆきちゃんに失礼だろう。まだ小学校にも上がっていないが身のこなしは軽い。2〜3年前に菌を植えた榾木から、立派なしいたけが採れるようになって親子3人は朝から“しいたけ採り”で大忙しだった。

「そろそろ昼飯にするか」
父さんの声で冷たい沢の水でのどをうるおしながら、お握りと漬物のお昼が済んでも、しいたけはまだたくさん残っている。榾木は山のあちこちに散らばっているから、手間がかかるのだ。

午後の陽が西の山にかかる頃、やっと作業が終わった。重いカゴをしょった父さんに続いて、棒っきれを振り回しているゆきちゃん、ひとまわり小さいカゴを背負って、空になった水筒を抱えた母さんの順に並んで山を降りる。

家の近くにあるしいたけ小屋に着くと、そばの空き地にむしろを広げて、カゴのしいたけをどさっとあけた。金網を張った四角いザルのような大きな木枠を小屋から出して、その上にしいたけを一枚づつ並べてゆく。家族そろっての作業だ。ゆきちゃんの小さな手もちゃんと仕事をしている。

ふと見ると、母さんが形の悪いしいたけを横に除けているので、(今夜はあれで ”しいたけ飯“ を炊くんだな)  とゆきちゃんは楽しみだ。

この木枠を「しいたけ小屋」に積み上げてその下に炭火を入れる。炭火の火加減をしたり、むらなく乾燥するよう木枠を入れ替えたりと、父さんは夜も目が離せない。そうやって一晩かけて乾燥させてから、大きなブリキの缶に大事にしまっておく。

ブリキ缶がしいたけでいっぱいになる頃、行商のおじさんがやって来て村の家々を回る。正月の晴れ着やおもちゃを運んで来て、しいたけを買い取って行くのだった。

Stories of Mountain Life 2: Harvesting Shiitake Mushrooms

Autumn sunlight filters through the trees onto the logs arranged along the mountain slope.
Yuki-chan nimbly climbs over them, picking the shiitake mushrooms growing here and there and tossing them into the small basket at her waist.

That's impressive, you're like a little monkey."
Father, who had been drawing water from a nearby stream, looks up in admiration.


"She really is more useful than a monkey."
Mother, who was picking mushrooms with her, also laughed. It would be rude to the monkeys, or perhaps it would be rude to Yuki-chan. Although she hasn't even started elementary school yet, she is light on her feet. The three of them had been busy since morning "shiitake picking," as the logs they inoculated with spores two or three years ago were now producing a fine harvest.
"Shall we have lunch soon?"
At Father's words, they quenched their thirst with the cold stream water. Even after finishing their lunch of rice balls and pickles, there were still plenty of shiitake mushrooms left. Since the logs are scattered all over the mountain, it takes a lot of effort.
By the time the afternoon sun reached the western mountains, the work was finally finished. Following Father, who carried a heavy basket, Yuki-chan, swinging a stick, and Mother, carrying a slightly smaller basket on her back and holding an empty water bottle, walked down the mountain in a line.
When they arrived at the shiitake hut near their house, they spread a straw mat on the nearby vacant lot and dumped the mushrooms from their baskets. They brought out large wooden frames from the hut that looked like square sieves covered in wire mesh, and began lining up the mushrooms on them one by one. It was a task for the whole family. Yuki-chan's small hands were doing their part, too.
Suddenly, she noticed Mother setting aside the misshapen mushrooms, and Yuki-chan looked forward to the thought, (She's going to cook "shiitake rice" with those tonight).
These wooden frames are stacked in the "shiitake hut," and charcoal fires are placed underneath. Father cannot take his eyes off them, even at night, as he manages the heat of the charcoal and rotates the frames to ensure they dry evenly. After spending the whole night drying them this way, he carefully stores them in large tin cans.
By the time the tin cans are full of shiitake mushrooms, a traveling merchant comes around to visit the houses in the village. He brings New Year's outfits and toys, and buys the shiitake mushrooms in return.
