the river of fog flowing down
Good morning. Are you awake?
Natsumi sent a LINE message while it was still dark in the morning.
It's freezing this morning, so let's go see the Fuden-oroshi!
Ugh, I'm sleepy, it's cold...
Wake up! 😅
Thus, having been shaken awake, Naoya drove his car to the Hamaya Diner where Natsumi lived.
It had been over a year since Naoya came to this small seaside town as a member of the community revitalization volunteer force. He was a regular at the Hamaya Diner for lunch, and on his days off, he would show his face at the local youth soccer practice, so he had become quite close with Natsumi and her younger brother, Daigo.
Good morning.
Nao-niichan, I've been waiting!
Welcomed by Daigo, who held a cup of hot milk,
and after being treated to a breakfast of hot coffee and toast along with Reiko, an older friend of Natsumi's, the four of them split into two cars and headed toward the village at the foot of Fuden Pass.
Reiko was in Natsumi's car in the lead, and Naoya's car, with Daigo on board, followed behind. After driving up the winding mountain road for about 30 minutes, they arrived at a small village nestled in the mountains.
Enthusiastic photographers who had already set up their cameras and a few tourists
could be seen here and there.
Fuden-oroshi is
a phenomenon where morning mist that forms in the basin on the other side of the mountain is pushed by the wind,
crosses over Fuden Pass, and flows down all at once toward the foothills.
Fuden Pass is part of the Kumano Kodo, and because its elevation is lower than the surrounding mountains, it serves as a path for the wind. It is said that Fuden-oroshi is most likely to occur on mornings following days with a large temperature difference between day and night, between October and March.

And this village was the perfect spot to see that "Fuden-oroshi."
In the rising morning sun, it had already slowly begun.
"Oh, wow, that's amazing."
"Oh, how beautiful!"
Naoya and Reiko... the two of them, seeing it for the first time, let out voices of admiration.
The white fog covered the mountains, spreading out leisurely and enveloping the village.
The group, forgetting the cold, enjoyed the fantastic scene for a while.
Before long, as the sun rose higher and the fog thinned, the four of them leisurely descended the mountain.
The sun began to shine on the blue sea, and the cold of the early morning felt like a lie.
There was no wind.
Natsumi, who was ahead on the coastal highway, stopped the car.
"Why don't we take a walk on the beach?"
"Sounds good."
The small seaside town was peacefully making the sound of waves again today.
