[Modernization Project] Part 3: Correcting a Distorted World. ~Calibration: Conclusion (?) Edition~
Hello! This is Re:NISSAN from Re:Tech Japan.
After the hellish ordeal of drilling the coupler, all the "eyes" were finally connected in the last installment. However, what was projected on the monitor was the all-too-harsh "reality" that the 25-year-old Avenir (Abe-san) is facing.
This time, I will deliver the record of the most difficult part of this project, and my current ongoing struggle: "calibration."

1. Getting it to display wasn't the end.
The joy of the moment the camera image appeared was short-lived; what spread across the screen was a distorted, otherworldly landscape. Four views pointing in completely different directions, front, back, left, and right. The task of stitching these into a single "bird's-eye view" is what calibration is all about.
I spread out a dedicated calibration sheet (or rather, a floor mat I had at home lol) on the ground, measured the values with a tape measure in hand, and punched them into the control unit. The background music was HUNTRIX's "What It Sounds Like." Calmly, yet persistently, I repeated this "answer checking" process until I was satisfied.

2. After 3 to 4 trials and errors.
At first, the results were disastrous, with the car body appearing tilted or the tire positions misaligned. However, as I repeated the calibration two, three times, I could see the distortion of the world gradually, bit by bit, being corrected.

In the end, after a total of four adjustments, I finally managed to reach a level that is "usable for practical purposes." As a perfectionist, there are still many parts I'm not satisfied with. The front and rear cameras aren't level, creating a strange sensation where things seem to spread out in a V-shape. And the problem of the car's own body inevitably appearing in the side cameras...

3. "Experience" over "Perfection."
Regarding the issue of the car body appearing on the sides, I can't yet say whether it's the limit of the angle due to the heat-forming process or just a specification of this kit. But I suddenly thought: "Isn't it actually easier to grasp the distance to obstacles precisely because the car's own lines are visible?"
Rather than staying in the quagmire of adjustment hell aiming for "perfection," I chose to first get myself used to this "newly acquired field of vision." I chose a positive compromise called "postponement."
3.1 Manual fine-tuning makes it quite viewable.

Conclusion: DIY never ends.
Honestly, I wanted to try that "camera hole modification" I saw on YouTube. This project was driven by that kind of curiosity. Taking apart the mirrors, breaking the tabs, ruining the motor, drilling holes in the coupler... I lost quite a few things, but what I gained is 360-degree peace of mind and the solid feeling of having updated my beloved car with my own hands.
Mastering the Around View Monitor in a 25-year-old Avenir. I plan to enjoy this slightly strange, yet incredibly luxurious car life from here on out.
