Latest research from Kyoto University, Hokkaido University, and RIKEN proves that plants design their rhizosphere using metabolites
—Plant toxins were building 'homes' underground—
Hello, this is Fukaya Village.
Recently, a research team from Kyoto University, Hokkaido University, and RIKEN announced some very interesting research results.
They are—
The toxin produced by tobacco (nicotine) serves as 'food for microorganisms' underground
—that is what it is.
The announcement from Kyoto University is here👇
Plant toxins become food for microorganisms: Discovery of the function of nicotine produced by tobacco in the formation of rhizosphere microbiota

'Toxins are food?' 'Do insect-repellent components serve a purpose around the roots?'
At first glance, it seems strange, but this perfectly aligns with the 'rhizosphere OS world' that Fukaya Village has been talking about all along.
Plants are 'building homes for their roots'
At Fukaya Village, we have introduced how plants create 'environments where they can grow easily = homes' around their roots, such as mid-layer design for tomatoes, surface microbial mulch for carrots, and internal circulation systems for lemons.
What was revealed in this study is the fact that
plants are building their own root environments.
Tobacco uses nicotine to call 'friendly microorganisms' to the area around its roots
—that is the fact.
In other words,
a toxin that repels insects above ground
A "signal" to select microorganisms underground
As a result, a rhizosphere where tobacco grows easily is created
This means a dual-structure system was at work.
Nicotine is an invitation saying, "Only these microorganisms may come."
What the research team discovered was that
only bacteria called Arthrobacter can break down nicotine and use it as food
is the case.
Other microorganisms cannot use nicotine.
In other words, tobacco
releases nicotine from its roots → only microorganisms that can eat nicotine gather → a tobacco-specific rhizosphere OS is launched
This means it was building its own "root home" through this mechanism.
This is the same structure as tomatoes creating a mid-layer OS, and carrots and radishes growing straight with a surface-layer OS.
Other plants operate with the same mechanism
This study focused on tobacco, but the same mechanism can be seen in other plants.
Tomato → Tomatine
Coffee → Caffeine
Tea → Catechin
Legumes → Saponin
Citrus → Terpene
These are all
Defense above ground, 'microbial selection' below ground
It is a metabolite with dual functions.
In other words, all plants are living organisms that design their own rhizosphere.
What this research has shown
Plants use toxins to call 'friendly microbes' around their roots.
This is exactly the same world as what
Surface OS
Middle OS
Internal Circulation OS
Microbial Network
Root Home Building
has been conveying.
The latest research has come to support the internal circulation theory of Fukaya Village.
Common Questions (Q&A for Beginners)
Q: If it's a toxin, why don't the microbes die?
A: Even if it is a toxin above ground, it can act as a 'selective substance' below ground.
Q: Why do only specific microbes gather?
A: Because only microbes with the 'ability' to break down nicotine survive.
Q: Is it the same for other plants?
A: Yes. Many plants design their rhizosphere with metabolites.
Summary
Plants are building 'homes' around their roots
Tobacco plants used nicotine to call friendly microbes
Toxins become 'selective agents' underground
The same structure as the internal circulation OS of tomatoes, carrots, and lemons
Latest research confirms the Fukaya Village theory
