The other day, I participated in NewsPicks' The Update.
The theme this time was "DEI."
It's not a DEA drama, haha.
But it was a good opportunity to rethink what this DEI actually is.
What is DEI in the first place?
It is an acronym for "Diversity," "Equity," and "Inclusion."
Simply put, it is a concept that aims to create an environment where diverse talent is treated fairly and each individual's personality and abilities can be fully utilized.
Diversity
The coexistence of people with various characteristics such as gender, age, nationality, cultural background, and the presence or absence of disabilities.
Equity
Aiming not only for equality of opportunity but also for equality of outcome. Providing support according to each person's situation.
Inclusion
Creating an environment where diverse people are accepted, respected, and can contribute.
What is important in promoting DEI is,
Recognizing and removing unconscious bias.
Instead of judging people based on preconceptions like "because they are a man," "because they are young," or "because they are a foreigner," it is required to fairly evaluate individual abilities and potential.
In the context of DEI, the protection of rights and opportunities for minorities is often emphasized.
However, true DEI aims for an environment where everyone, including the majority, is respected and can thrive.
A question arises here.
Why is DEI necessary?
Promotion of innovation: Diverse perspectives generate new ideas.
Securing excellent talent: Organizations that respect diversity attract a wide range of talent.
Social responsibility: Contributing to the creation of a fair and inclusive society.
Improvement of management performance: Research results show that diverse organizations demonstrate higher performance.
I often hear people say that "DEI is not progressing," but there is actually another perspective.
For example, the issue that "men's participation in the home is not progressing."
Men with childcare experience should be able to demonstrate a different level of understanding and ability to act both in the workplace and at home.
In other words, promoting DEI is not just a workplace issue; it requires a transformation of awareness and behavior across society as a whole.
However, measuring the results of DEI is not easy.
Instead of simply looking at the ratio of female managers, don't we need multifaceted indicators like the following?
Employee satisfaction
Changes in turnover rate
Innovation indicators (number of new product developments, etc.)
Quality of organizational decision-making
Changes in customer satisfaction
The goal of DEI
is not simply to achieve numerical diversity.
The true goal is for diverse personalities and abilities to be utilized to their fullest potential, thereby enriching both the organization and society as a whole.
To achieve this, continuous effort and a change in mindset are necessary.
It cannot be realized overnight, but it is important to make steady progress, one step at a time.
DEI is also deeply connected to my worldview of designing a world that pursues the harmony of technology and humanity, and realizes the sustainable growth of individuals and organizations.
By respecting diversity, ensuring equity, and creating an inclusive environment, we should be able to build a richer and more creative society.
