Altruism becomes an acquired virtue and character through daily practice
The September issue of "Poplar News," the school newspaper of Yushi International High School (correspondence course), has arrived.
The first article is "From the Principal."
The theme this time is "The Scene of Moral Education Classes."
Starting in July, the 2025 school year schooling (face-to-face classes) began in earnest at each campus, starting with the full-time students. This time, I will discuss "Morality," a subject I teach during schooling.
Morality, along with "correct history education," is one of the pillars of our school's founding spirit.
The focus of our school's morality is "altruism."
If I may be so bold, it is based on the premise of not seeking anything in return.
I consider this a time to think together about and spread the spirit of altruism, which is the essential key to inviting good fortune and bringing blessings as a result of practicing it in social life.
Now, the themes for the "Morality" schooling classes are "What is Morality?" for the first year, "Ambition" for the second year, and "The Imperial Family" for the third year.
I develop the classes so that they lead from the cultivation of an altruistic heart to the refinement of character. I also substitute terms for altruism such as "compassion," "for the sake of the world and others," "benevolence," "love," "self-sacrifice," "forgiveness," and "sympathy."
Following this, student reflections are introduced.
"If there is someone suffering, I think I can reach out and help them, even if just a little—I am glad I was born in Japan." First-year student H.T.
"The fact that important people are near me is not something to be taken for granted—because I had parents, because the two of them met, and because they raised me with all their might, I am who I am today—" First-year student A.H.
"—That is precisely why I want to re-examine myself and help even one person I can help with these hands. This is my ambition." Second-year student E.Y.
"—I thought that (the Emperor) thinks of the people and the country and cherishes them. —I felt once again that I am glad to have been born in this country. As a citizen, I want to do what I can from now on." Third-year student A.H.
Finally, the principal's words.
I feel that altruism is something that is sublimated into an acquired virtue and character through the practice of it in daily life. Furthermore, does it not lead and guide us to our own unique roles, responsibilities, and missions that no one else can replace? The successive Emperors and the members of the Imperial Family, including His Majesty the current Emperor, demonstrate the practice of altruism. End.
The students may have ended up at this school by chance, but I believe they have been blessed with a good connection.
