🐟 This Catch
3:00 PM in May. A time when the air temperature rises and the water temperature gradually increases. Perhaps because it coincided with the bass feeding time, the line started running shortly after my approach.
It was in a condition still recovering from spawning, yet it had this physique. It is a fish raised by the rich ecosystem of Ezu Lake.
🌊 The Field of Ezu Lake
Located in the heart of Kumamoto City, Ezu Lake is a clear-water lake fed by abundant spring water. With its high transparency and lush aquatic plants, this field has long been loved by local anglers as a hidden gem for bass fishing.
Reed beds along the shore, overhangs extending into the water—the afternoon in May is a prime opportunity when water temperatures stabilize and bass move actively to feed.
💡 Tips for Landing a Lunker
1. Target the 3:00 PM feeding window
Bass activity tends to increase in the afternoon when water temperatures are stable. In May, large individuals recovering from spawning feed actively.
1. Carefully target structures
Edges of reeds, deep under overhangs, shadows of fallen trees. Lunkers are always positioned in 'places with a reason'.
1. Slow approach with a focus on the fall
Bites were concentrated during the fall to the bottom. I let it fall while keeping a little tension on the line.
1. Create a 'pause' on the bottom
A 3-5 second pause after hitting the bottom. This 'pause' makes the big ones bite. Patience is key.

📝 Thoughts
The line ran, and I set the hook with all my might. The fish that bit on the natural fall of the no-sinker rig transmitted a solid weight to my hands. It was a fish over 50cm, truly worthy of being called a lunker.
Ezu Lake is easily accessible, and the beauty of a bass caught in such a high-transparency environment is exceptional. If you fish carefully, slowly, and with respect for the field, it will always reward you.
💬 The potential of Ezu Lake has not yet hit rock bottom.
