A Special Story About Diapers: The Evolution of Adult Diapers
Delivered by Natsuko Nichome, a ward nurse with over 30 years of experience
A story about the evolution of adult diapers.
Looking back through time, how have diapers evolved?
I will share the latest situation from the front lines!
Before that, what inspired me to write this article was
Kinya Okano's
article here👇👇👇
When it comes to adult diapers,
if you work in a medical setting, it's such a daily sight
that you don't really notice it,
but if an adult actually ends up needing to use diapers,
I think there are many anxieties involved.
So, I will use illustrations
to explain the history of diapers
in an easy-to-understand way.
Here you go🤲

What is particularly noteworthy is
the 3D leg gathers shown in Figure 3.
Because the gathers stand up firmly,
the effectiveness of preventing leaks from the gaps around the legs has increased significantly!
*Thanks to the gathers, even loose stool is less likely to leak.*
And then,
there is the adoption of the superabsorbent polymer shown in Figure 4.
The polymer is characterized by its ability to firmly hold onto
the moisture it has absorbed and not let it go.
Furthermore, a high water absorption capacity is another feature of the polymer.
It can absorb urine 30 to 70 times the weight of the polymer itself.
Although it is also used in sanitary products,
thanks to the adoption of the polymer,
adult diapers
have achieved being "more leak-proof and thinner."
Also, the tapes have evolved.
To ensure a better fit,
there are now two tapes on each side, for a total of four.
You can adjust the fit by how you fasten the tapes.
Furthermore, the surface material of the diaper has also evolved.
With materials that are more breathable and less likely to stick to the skin,
it has become less likely to cause rashes even when wearing a diaper for long periods.
There is also consideration for the“caregiver”when applying the diaper.
That is the“center line”on the back.
If you align this “center line” with the spine,
it is designed so that the diaper
naturally fits in the center of the buttocks.
If you use the illustrated diaper together with
an “urine absorbent pad,”
you can change the “urine absorbent pad” frequently,
making it even more comfortable and economical
to manage excretion with diapers.
Regarding concerns about odors,
various manufacturers are incorporating different technologies.
For example: incorporating “activated carbon” into the sheet material
to physically absorb odors, or
by adopting deodorizing super absorbent polymers (deodorizing SAP),
the polymer itself catches ammonia odors,
neutralizing and absorbing them.
They are designed to prevent unpleasant odors from spreading.
Ingenuity has been applied.
There are also products that incorporate
plant-derived ingredients, such as natural 'tea leaf extract',
into the sheet portion.
Adult diapers have also
like baby diapers,
become available in a wide range of sizes to fit different body types.
Also,
for those who are mobile or can change them themselves,
there are also pant-style diapers like those shown in Figure 5.as well.
These, too, are evolving year by year to be thinner,
more leak-proof, and easier to put on and take off.
Products with high-quality designs have also started to appear.
Measures against unpleasant odors are also included.
Behind the evolution of adult diapers,
there is the rising demand due to an aging society,
and for living better and more like oneself,
I feel there is an aspect of them being a 'life partner'.as well.
Diapers have
shifted from their role of 'catching waste'
to becoming a 'partner in daily life'.
I feel their position has changed.

Let me introduce myself again.
I am currently working at a chronic care hospital
as an active ward nurse: Natsuko Nichome.
In the ward where I currently work, the diaper usage rate is 100%.
What I feel on the front lines is
'that even with fewer changes, leaks have stopped'
and 'the odor of waste has decreased'.
I can feel that scientific progress
is being applied to these products.
Of course, it's not that they 'never leak'
or 'have absolutely no odor',
but the performance of diapers is definitely improving.
At the hospital where I work, we also receive training on 'how to put on diapers'.
The instructor is from the diaper manufacturer. (They are professionals at teaching how to apply diapers.)
What did you think of this story about adult diapers?
To help solve your concerns regarding excretion
I would be very happy if this article could be of any help.
I would be very pleased.
