For SCP Beginners! ~Explaining Terms While Reading SCP-173~
Hello, this is Salmon-maru.
Have you ever heard the name SCP, but thought, "It seems kind of difficult" or "Where should I start reading?"
I felt the same way at first.
That is exactly why I want you to try reading just one!
This time, let's read one recommended SCP while learning some basic terms related to SCP!
If you'd like, why not do a little preparation with my previous article? ↓
🔍 What is "SCP"?
"SCP" refers to "mysterious objects or entities."
🔍 What is the "SCP Foundation"?
The "SCP Foundation" is a fictional organization with the goal of Securing, Containing, and Protecting those "mysterious objects or entities."
Mysterious entities from all over the world are contained with SCP numbers and released as documents.
🔍 What is an "Object Class"?
Each SCP is assigned a classification called an "Object Class."
This indicates how difficult it is to safely keep that SCP contained.
The three representative Object Classes
【Safe】
→ Safe if contained properly!
Example: Just keeping it in a locked box is enough, etc.
【Euclid】
→ Can be contained, but requires caution.
Example: It moves unpredictably, or causes anomalies under specific conditions, etc.
【Keter】
→ It's just dangerous! Containment is difficult, and failure could lead to disaster!
Example: It escapes immediately even after containment, or could be a threat to humanity, etc.
The point is that these represent"difficulty of containment" rather than "danger level"!
In other words, there are Safe ones that are super scary, and Keter ones that are actually harmless.
By the way... there are also special classes that don't fit into these three, but that's for another time!
📖 Let's read one!
Here, I will post a link to an article from the original SCP Foundation site.
Did you tap the link and read it?
......
What does that mean!?
Is there anyone who felt that way?
Even though it is relatively short and easy to read, it might be quite difficult to understand at first glance.
I will explain the terms one by one!
■ What is an "Item #"?
This is the management number assigned to an SCP.
For example, like "SCP-173" or "SCP-999", each one has a number. It's like the SCP's name!
■ What is an "Object Class"?
I explained this earlier, right?
It is a classification based on the "difficulty of containment" of the SCP. Safe, Euclid, Keter... that kind of thing!
Do you remember? The key point is that it doesn't necessarily mean it's safe!
■ What is a "Special Containment Procedures"?
This is the manual or set of rules on how to safely store and manage that SCP.
It describes containment methods tailored to the anomaly, such as keeping it in a locked box or ensuring staff never take their eyes off it.
■ What is "Personnel"?
These are the so-called "D-Class personnel," the "expendable staff" used for SCP experiments and the like.
They are humans chosen primarily from death row inmates or violent criminals, and they are tasked with making contact with SCPs or performing dangerous work.
They are essential "pawns" for the Foundation.
With that in mind, if you read the explanation, this SCP is...
"Must be kept in a locked container at all times"
"When personnel enter SCP-173's container, there must be"
"at least three people present"
"The door is locked after entering"
"Until all personnel have exited the container and it is locked again, two of the personnel who entered must"
"【always keep eyes on SCP-173】"
Wait! Why do they have to do that?
What happens if they look away or blink?
"SCP-173 is alive and extremely hostile"
"SCP-173 cannot move while in direct line of sight"
"Never break eye contact with SCP-173"
"Personnel entering the container are instructed to alert each other before blinking"
"SCP-173 has been reported to attack by methods such as 【snapping the neck】 or 【strangulation】"
An SCP that doesn't even allow you to blink, and will immediately come to end your life if it finds an opening.
That is what 【SCP-173】 was.
☝️ By the way
Most of the images used for SCPs in SCP articles are taken from the internet.
Originally, the start of SCP was based on the vibe of "Let's take images found on the net and attach creepy stories to them to make them interesting."
This SCP-173 also used an image of a certain work found on the net as an example, but it was recently deleted due to 【copyright issues】!
That is the whole story written in the bottom half of the linked SCP article.
📝 Finally
Thank you so much for reading this far!
I plan to continue introducing more, from things that are easy for beginners to understand to obscure SCPs recommended for those who are getting used to it!
If you have any requests like "I like this type of SCP!" or "It's not an SCP, but please dig into this genre!", please let me know in the comments! 🗂✨
Personally, I love horror, depressing, and bad-taste stories, so those will be more frequent.
