I Bought a Nursing Table Before My Grandmother Did | The Night I Fell Asleep in Bed for the First Time

In this post, I will write about my impressions of purchasing a nursing table.

Honestly, it is so comfortable that I feel a sense of crisis, thinking, 'If I'm not careful, I'm heading straight for becoming a shut-in.' It might already be too late.

The reason for the purchase

Spreading out a futon in an empty closet and bringing in my favorite books and toys. When I was a child, I loved that kind of 'secret base-like space.'

I think I probably found comfort in the feeling of having everything I needed and loved packed tightly into a small space.

Even after growing up, my preferences haven't changed much, and I've always had a bit of a longing for environments like 'gaming beds' or 'beds that make people lazy.'

That said, I was resistant to creating an environment where I could live without ever leaving my bed. I thought that if I made the layout too easy to be lazy in, my muscle strength would decline.

My parents also used to tell me repeatedly, 'If you don't exercise while you're young, you really won't be able to move in the future.'

Even so, the reason I bought a table that attaches to the bed—and one sold specifically for nursing care at that—is because it was becoming exhausting to sit at a desk to work.

I go to university a few times a week, and on the days after that or on holidays, perhaps as a reaction to the tension I've been under, I sometimes oversleep in the morning. There were days when I would just spend the entire day on the bed.

However, even on days when I'm too tired to move, report deadlines don't wait for me. It would be nice if I could finish them between classes, but in reality, I often end up bringing them home to work on.

I don't have the energy to sit at a desk. So, I end up sitting cross-legged on the bed with my computer on my lap to work.

Naturally, my posture while working becomes terrible.

Both during and after working, my back throbs with pain. I could tell that my neck, shoulders, and lower back were all under strain.

If I'm going to be stuck in bed anyway, I want to work in a slightly better posture. Thinking that, and since it happened to be on sale, I bought this table.

Setting it up

The assembly itself is basically fine if you follow the instructions.

However, it is a bit difficult to align the height of the table legs when working alone. Therefore, I think it is easier to assemble the whole thing first and then use a box or something similar to align the height (see illustration).

Adjusting the height while supporting it with a box

As a general guide for height, it is just right if you can move your legs easily on the bed. It is easier to use if you set it to a height that leaves room even when you bend your legs.

If you make it too low, you will hit your legs and end up covered in bruises.

Also, it is better to have the computer at a slightly higher position because it raises your line of sight, which naturally makes it easier to keep your back straight.

The night I was so comfortable I fell asleep

The table arrived around 8 p.m.

I had finished my bath and dinner and was lazily watching YouTube, but I started assembling it as soon as I received it.

I adjusted the width and height to a position I was satisfied with and combined it with the bed.

The table fit my single bed, which I use daily, better than I had expected. Since it is a table originally designed for beds, that is to be expected.

I immediately placed my computer on the table and resumed playing the YouTube video I had been watching earlier.

At first, I was watching it while sitting on the bed, but before I knew it, my posture was gradually collapsing into a more and more relaxed position. Just like that, I was lying down before I knew it.

Furthermore, in that flow, I crawled under the duvet and completely transitioned into a sleeping position.

The moment I thought my consciousness had slipped away for an instant, I looked at the clock and it was 5:30 in the morning.

My thoughts on falling asleep for the first time

I felt like it was a waste.

It felt like an instantaneous event, and I had almost no awareness that I had actually slept. It felt like my consciousness had just drifted away for a brief moment. I didn't feel like I had rested.

Even so, I was surprised that more than six hours had passed before I realized it.

Up until now, the routine of turning off the lights, wrapping myself in a futon in a dark room, and then falling asleep was the norm for me.

I think the act of "darkening the room" served as a break for sleeping.

This time, I fell asleep just like that without that break. That might be why the feeling of having slept was so faint.

Thoughts after using it

I did fall asleep on the first day, but since then, I've been able to use it without falling asleep.

That said, I can't really say I'm using it at an appropriate distance.
The videos are so interesting that it's normal for me to end up staying up late.

It is certain that my posture while sitting and working on the bed has become more comfortable.

However, on the other hand, I have also started to feel thatit's a hassle to even sit up on the bed in the first place.

Next, I want a nursing bed.
I'll buy one once I'm prepared to be lazy.
