My first-grade grandchild started Karate... 🥋
It seems they are enjoying going to class 😊

Since they joined, I was asked to alter a gi, specifically to shorten the sleeves of the jacket and the hem of the pants of a hand-me-down from a fellow student ☺️
It is strange how altering things for my grandchild becomes a reason for living for a grandma... 🤔 My motivation suddenly surges and I feel energized 👍💕

The alteration request was to shorten the sleeve length and the pant length
of the gi handed down from my grandchild's senior.

I doubt a home sewing machine will be able to handle the parts where the sides are joined 🤔

To shorten the pants, I had my grandchild put them on, measured the right leg to match their leg length, and cut it with scissors ✂️. My grandchild, who cannot sit still, was impatient to have the left leg measured and was fidgeting, so I decided to just take the measurements from the right leg, fold it up, and shorten the left side to match.


Then, I cut the left leg to match the length from the hem just like the right.

But...

Huh?

I should have cut the same length from the hem ✂️...

The left pant leg is 4cm shorter 😱

Does this kind of thing happen? 😳
In my 70 years of life, I have never once experienced pants having a 4cm difference between the left and right sides! 😳
I am shocked that the right and left pant legs are 4cm different in length‼️😱

Usually, the pant legs should be the same length, so I thought I was doing something standard...
But the left and right pant legs were 4cm different... Oh, what should I do? 😨
Do you wear karate pants with only the right leg longer? 😨

There wasn't enough seam allowance for the hem fold on the left pant leg...

Don't panic... don't panic... I'm channeling Ikkyu-san's state of mind... 😓

Take a deep breath 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨......

It hit me! 👍

I used the cut-off hem piece as a facing (can you tell in the picture? ☺️),
ironed it, folded it, and sewed it to the inside, and somehow finished the pants alteration. ☑️
Since it was a slightly stretchy fabric, I was able to match it to the hem opening. 🎉

Of course, I made the right and left legs the same length.

The jacket sleeve lengths were the same.
I cut these too and shortened the sleeve length.

It seems like a hand-me-down gi, and since they wanted to remove the part with the name and put my grandchild's name on it, I used the 4cm scrap from the right leg, put double-sided fusible interfacing in between, attached the fabric, and sewed it with the machine.
I covered the previous owner's name so that my grandchild's name could be added.

I also shortened the sleeve length by about 6cm~

Perhaps the previous person who wore this gi altered it themselves by hand~ ☺️ There was thick cotton thread left here and there...

I don't know anything about karate gis, so at first I wondered if the pant legs in karate were supposed to be different lengths 🤣

I really can't bring myself to throw away even scraps of fabric 🙂‍↕️

It was an event that made me think, "Well, funny things really do happen" 💕
But it was a lot of fun 🤭
