⚡ This time's theme: The 5 Elements of Bookkeeping
The world of bookkeeping is made up of just '5 elements (Assets, Liabilities, Net Assets, Expenses, and Revenue)'.
These five create two important documents (stories) called the Balance Sheet (B/S)andthe Profit and Loss Statement (P/L).
Together with Ten's lighthearted singing voice, let's deeply understand the super important rules of journal entries and the roles of financial statements!
① The B/S companions (Assets, Liabilities, Net Assets)
{🎵 Lyrics}
Let's learn the 5 elements of bookkeeping (Five Elements!)
Assets / Liabilities / Net Assets
These are the companions of the Balance Sheet (B/S)
First on the left side is Assets, Cash, Buildings, Goods,
The property a company owns. If it increases, it's on the left (Debit side), if it decreases, it's on the right (Credit side)
{📝 Bookkeeping Explanation!
The 'Balance Sheet (B/S)' is a document that shows 'what kind of property and debts a company has at a certain point in time (closing date)'.
On the left side (Debit), there are 'Assets' which have the power to generate future profits, such as cash and buildings.
On the right side (Credit), there are 'Liabilities' that must be repaid someday, such as loans, and 'Net Assets' which are your own capital that does not need to be repaid, such as capital stock.
'Assets = Liabilities + Net Assets'
Because the total of the left and right sides must always match perfectly, it is called a 'Balance Sheet'!
💡 One-point advice: The journal entry puzzle rule
Each of the 5 elements has a 'home position'.
Writing on the home position side means 'increase', and writing on the opposite side means 'decrease'—that is the iron rule of journal entries!
For example, the home position for assets is 'left'. If cash increases, write it on the left (Debit), and if you use cash and it decreases, write it on the opposite right (Credit). It's just that simple!
② The P/L story (Expenses, Revenue)
{🎵 Lyrics}
And the flow of money begins to move
Expenses / Revenue
This is the story of the Profit and Loss Statement (P/L)
Expenses are purchases and salaries, using money to create value. Revenue is sales and commissions. If it increases, it's on the right (Credit side), the source of profit. If you subtract expenses from revenue, that is your Net Profit!
【📝 Bookkeeping Explanation!】
The 'Profit and Loss Statement (P/L)' is a document that shows 'how much a company earned and how much it spent over a certain period, such as one year'.
On the right side (credit) is 'Revenue,' which is earnings such as sales.
On the left side (debit) are 'Expenses,' such as purchases and salaries, used to earn that revenue.
The remainder after subtracting expenses from revenue is the 'Net Income for the period,' the crystallization of the company's hard work!
💡 Trivia: The 'Debit' vs. 'Credit' dilemma
For those who think, 'I can never remember which is left or right for debit and credit!', there is a magical way to remember it that has been passed down for a long time.
The 'ri' in Debit (karikata) strokes to the left, so it's 【Left】!
-
The 'shi' in Credit (kashikata) strokes to the right, so it's 【Right】! Now you won't be confused anymore!
③ Two worlds describe a company!
【🎵 Lyrics】
B/S (Balance Sheet) is Stock P/L (Profit and Loss) is Flow 5 elements describe the company Dance! On the dance floor of numbers!
【📝 Bookkeeping Explanation!】
The B/S represents the state of assets at 'a certain point in time' (stock), while the P/L represents business performance over 'a certain period' (flow).
Actually, these two are not completely separate things! The 'Net Income' calculated in the P/L eventually warps into the 'Net Assets (Retained Earnings)' of the B/S and merges. When the story connects—'the more profit you make in the P/L, the thicker the net assets in the B/S become, and the richer the company gets'—you will realize how interesting bookkeeping is! It is truly a masterpiece of Nissho Bookkeeping!
🦊 MV Highlights: Pay attention to 'Ten' as they move dynamically in a country & Celtic world!
This MV is packed with Ten's charm, set to Irish/country-style music featuring fiddles (violins) and bodhráns (drums)! ✨
It starts with a relaxed expression lounging on a bed of hay, then moves to stepping in front of village houses, and running around energetically with buckets in both hands! There's even a cool profile shot of Ten gripping the steering wheel of a truck 🚗💨
Don't miss the sight of Ten embodying the 'dance floor of numbers' freely, with their light blue hair and fox ears swaying! 👀🔍
In conclusion
If you ever get confused when making a journal entry, wondering 'Is it right or left?', try playing the chorus and the rules of increase/decrease in your head! Once you know the home position (fixed location) of the 5 elements, studying bookkeeping will become fun all at once!
💡 Today's 'Review Memo'
