A story about how I fell in love with Okinawa's island bananas
Good evening. I'm Ponchi, a 24-year-old living in Okinawa. It's been one month since I moved to Okinawa, and I've encountered a food that seems like it will become an essential companion for my life here, so please let me tell you about it.
My workplace owner was busy pruning the garden. When I looked closely to see what they were working so hard to pick, it was actually
bananas!! First of all, I found it strange that bananas just grow in the garden like that. Haha, but it seems to be quite normal in Okinawa! Everyone was told to help themselves, and each staff member was given a bunch of
island bananas. I was told, 'These island bananas have a strong tartness,' so I was planning to put them in yogurt with some honey.
I finished work and went home. Island bananas... the name sounds cute and nice. I'll try eating one just as it is first! ...I took a
bite.
Huh?!! What is this????!!!! It's incredibly rich!!!!!!!
I was just so surprised. Haha. Having eaten Philippine bananas from the supermarket for 24 years, I can't eat any other bananas anymore!! Definitely!! Yes, I can't eat any other bananas besides these. I was so surprised by the deliciousness of Okinawa's island bananas that I can say that with certainty.
(...Anyway, I'm writing this as hard as I can while bubbling over with excitement because I want to share how delicious island bananas are. Below are my impressions after eating them. Please bear with me if you'd like...)
? First of all, what is the difference between supermarket bananas and island bananas?
↓ Ponchi's impressions.
1. First, the richness of the flavor. It's so, so rich. A depth and a sweetness that is packed in, followed by a slight tartness. This balance is also perfect. 2. The aroma is fruity, and I feel a flavor somewhere between
peach and apple. 3. And what is overwhelmingly different is the
texture! It's very sticky and, once again, rich!!!!! It moistens the throat. 4. The skin is thin
, and the size is a bit small, making it easy to finish in one go.
To think that it's excellent not just in taste but also in ease of eating... Sigh... I love you. Island banana... Ponchi has completely become a captive of the island banana.
I bought an oven range and a pound cake mold because I want to make banana cake with these island bananas!! I'm convinced it will be absolutely delicious. When should I make the banana cake? Okay, I'll do it the day after tomorrow. Should I add cinnamon and use a little less sugar to let the banana shine?
Today was very fulfilling, too. These things aren't something to be taken for granted. I'm grateful. I'll live tomorrow while savoring each and every event as well.
I think I'll have some MOW ice cream with cinnamon after my bath. Good night.
Ponchi
