一語の宇宙 | 様々な脅し方(threaten)

「threaten」(スレトゥン)。
「脅す」という意味。
いくつかの辞書を見ると次のような「用例」が出ている。

(1) 「リーダーズ英和辞典 (第３版)」(研究社)

~threatened me with dismissal 
(首にするぞとおどした)

~threaten sb's life 
(人を殺すとおどす)

~threatened to kill me 
(殺すぞとおどした)

threaten a strike 
(ストを打つぞとおどす)

A flood threatened the city. 
(洪水の危険が市をおびやかしていた)

The sky threatens a storm.

be threatened with extinction

まとめ

「threaten」は基本的に「~を脅す」という「他動詞」として用いる。そして、他動詞として用いるときは、そのまま名詞をとるか、あるいは「to + 動詞の原形」(不定詞の名詞的用法)をとる。
その場合、目的語にくるのは、「人」だけでなく、「無生物」もありうる。
また、「threaten a strike」のように、「ストライキを脅す」ではなく、「ストライキをすること(をちらつかせる)」のように、「~するぞと脅す」という意味になるときもある。

He disappeared whenever trouble threatened. 
のように、一見、目的語のない「自動詞」のように用いられるときも、目的語が省略されていると思われる場合がほとんどである。

いま、挙げた例文なら、
He disappeared whenever trouble threatened (him). 
のように、「threatened」のあとに「him」が省略されていると考えても良いだろう。
