Children and Money: 'Let's Teach Them How to Increase Their Allowance๐'
This is not about asset management๐
Children always want a little more allowance, whether it's to play with or to buy things they want.
So, as a parent, are you teaching your child how they can increase their allowance even a little bit?
When a child says, 'Give me more allowance!๐', just saying 'No!๐ข' is a bit boring, isn't it?
Since you have the chance, please do give your child a 'hint' on how they might be able to increase their allowance.
I wrote an article about this before.
Reading it over again now, I think I said some pretty good things๐, if I do say so myself, but I thought it might be easier to understand if I explained it to children from a slightly different angle.
And that is...
Solving the 'problems' of people who are in trouble.
For example, a mother who says, 'I'm so tired today.'
A child who sees their mother like that and gets an idea!
'Then, I'll fold the laundry for you today. If I do it properly, will you give me some allowance?๐'
If your child said this to you, what would you think?
'Why has this child become so greedy for money?'
I don't think you would ever look at your child that way.
The child is helping with their mother's 'problem' and trying to earn some allowance.
However, the desire to have an allowance and the desire to help solve Mom's problems.
Both are genuine feelings for a child.
There is no need for parents to look at this from a cynical perspective.
Accept your child's straightforward feelings, and give them their allowance along with the words 'thank you'โจ
And at that time, you can just tell them, 'If you find something else that Mom or Dad is struggling with, please help us again๐'.
If a mother says this to her child, how do you think the child will feel?
If I were the child...
No, perhaps even now that I am an adult, I think I would feel very happy.
I helped Mom with her problem, I got a 'thank you,' and I even got an allowance๐
There is nothing but good in this๐
Of course, I think there might be a tiny bit of worry.
What if they learn to take advantage of people's weaknesses to get money...?
But do you think a child raised in such a family would become that kind of person?
I don't think so.
I can say that with certainty.
A child who grows up watching the back of a parent like this will absolutely never become an adult who is greedy for money.
To earn money is to be told 'thank you'.
To receive a 'thank you,' you must solve someone's 'problem' or help them out.
Please give your children hints so they can naturally acquire this way of thinking while they are still young.
A common concern parents have when introducing a system of chores and rewards is:
'If I don't give them money, they might stop helping out.'
It's not about doing just any chore simply to get an allowance.
Try to proactively find and do chores that solve someone's 'problem' or help them out.
Only parents can help their children build this kind of foundation.
I believe that such a child will not just do chores blindly, but will take a step further and be able to do chores that they think about for themselves.

โ โ โ โ โ A book you'll want to read before starting an allowance ledger!
Reviewed in Japan on June 16, 2022
I was able to read it quickly thanks to the author's gentle tone! I realized that teaching children about money is one way of expressing love for them. I thought it was a wonderful messageโจ
Thanks to this book, I remembered the allowance ledgers my children wrote 10 years ago and pulled them out. Just as the title suggests, they were packed with memories; I found myself laughing out loud, and I was impressed by how much they had earned through helping out. It truly became a valuable record of their growth.
If your children are in kindergarten or elementary school, I highly recommend trying out an allowance ledgerโit serves as both a way to learn about money and a parenting diary filled with memories!
As an FP (Financial Planner), I often talk to parents about financial education for their children, and I would like to incorporate the ideas introduced in this book!
Thank you for reading until the end.
If you liked it, I would be very happy if you could give it a 'like,' follow me, or leave a comment.
I will definitely follow you back, so thank you in advance(^^โช
