Mother's Day: Words for my mother who passed away this March
"Mom, thank you for worrying about me until the very end."
February 28th, 10:00 PM. I was sleeping next to my mother, who was resting in her nursing bed.
Suddenly, I felt a presence and woke up.
When I turned my eyes toward the bed, I saw my mother's face staring intently at me.
"Did I wake you?"
My mother's voice was brighter than usual.
"No, I just woke up naturally. How are you feeling?"
I felt a sense of joy and immediately sat up to answer her.
"I feel good. More importantly, I have a request for you."
"What is it? I'll listen to anything."
My mother, who had been smiling until then, took on a pleading expression and said,
"You see, I want you to quit drinking. If you keep drinking every day like you do now, you will definitely ruin your liver. You'll die."
This became my mother's final wish.
The next day, at 11:20 AM, my mother passed away as if she were quietly sleeping.
I have been sober since that day.
Because I had been drinking every day for decades, the severe withdrawal symptoms lasted for two weeks.
But I endured them with all my might.
In recent years, my mother had never once interfered with what I did.
She had never once in the past said anything about my drinking.
Therefore, this final wish carried immense weight.
That is why I was able to endure it.
I will likely never drink again for the rest of my life.
I have set my smartphone wallpaper to a photo of my mother, and every time I look at it, I say, "I won't drink."
Thank you for reading until the end.
