This article provides a practical explanation of the necessary evaluation items and rehabilitation programs, working backward from the concrete goal of returning to the stadium.
Deconstructing the Abilities Required for Soccer Spectating
In Vol. 1, we explained how the participation goal of 'going to the stadium' is a complex activity.
In this installment, we will go a step further and specifically introduce evaluations and program designs worked backward from the goal of 'returning to stadium spectating'.
First, let's organize the physical functions necessary for watching soccer.
1. Walking Distance and Endurance
Depending on the stadium, the distance from the nearest station can be 500m to over 1km. Furthermore, movement within the stadium is added to this. Including the congestion before and after the match, it is not rare for a total walking distance of 2 to 3km or moreto be required.
Also, from the perspective of 'endurance,' it is important not just to be able to walk, but to have 'fatigue tolerance' so that you can return home without being overly exhausted after the match.
2. Climbing Stairs
Stadium spectator seats are generally steeply inclined. In addition, the route from the entrance gate to the seat almost always includes multiple sets of stairs.

Practical Assessment of Toileting
Beyond the excretion items of the FIM (Functional Independence Measure), an assessment from a practical perspective is necessary, such as '**can they finish within a time limit**' and '**can they complete the action even in a crowded environment**.'
Observing toileting situations at day service centers is essential, as is interviewing them about 'how they manage toileting at home.'
Program Design: Thinking in Terms of Spectating Simulation
Once the assessments are complete, it is time to design the program.
The key is to '**design by working backward from the stadium experience.**' Instead of simply training muscle strength or walking, build the program with the mindset of 'simulating the flow of the day of the match.'
Improving Aerobic Capacity
Aim to raise the baseline of endurance using ergometers or flat-ground walking.
The important thing is to aim for a '**body that can move even when tired.**' The most tiring part of the stadium experience is actually the journey home. The excitement of the match fades, and the body's fatigue sets in all at once—you need the endurance to return home safely even in this state.
As a program, the basic approach is about 20 to 30 minutes of sustained aerobic exercise about three times a week, gradually increasing the intensity and duration.
Strength Training (Especially Lower Limbs and Core)
The focus is on strengthening the quadriceps, gluteal muscles, and core to support climbing stairs and maintaining a seated position for long periods.
However, rather than just 'training with machines,' we focus on 'strengthening in a way that mimics real-life movements.' Designing a program that bridges functional training and actual movements—such as the act of climbing steps itself, standing up from a chair and sitting down slowly, and maintaining balance on unstable surfaces—is crucial.
Spectating Simulation Practice
This is the most unique and effective intervention.
Specifically, we practice by 'pretending the day service environment is a stadium.'
Recreating 'walking from the entrance to the seat': Using the facility's hallway to walk the distance to the actual stadium in segments.
Recreating 'stadium stairs': Continuous step-climbing practice using steps. This is done not just as muscle training, but while sharing the context of 'heading to the spectator seats.'
Recreating 'halftime restroom break': Practice completing the restroom routine within a 15-minute time limit. Have them actually use a clock to be conscious of the time.
Recreating 'movements while cheering': Practice movements such as vocalizing or leaning forward while seated in a chair.
This concept of 'simulation' also has a tremendous effect on maintaining the user's motivation. It creates a sense that 'today's training is directly connected to the stadium.'
Perspective on Environmental Adjustment
No matter how much rehabilitation is done, what one 'can do' changes significantly with environmental modifications.
Selecting Seat Locations
Stadium seats can be reserved in advance.
In addition to using 'accessibility seats (spaces for people with disabilities),' there are things that can be done even with general seating. Researching seats near aisles, areas close to restrooms, or gates with fewer stairs in advance and choosing the 'optimal seat' together with the user is also a valuable form of support.
Advance Confirmation of Restroom Routes
Stadium websites and official apps often feature seat maps and restroom locations.
By researching and simulating things like 'which restrooms are relatively empty' and 'how spacious the individual stalls are' in advance, you can significantly reduce anxiety on the day of the event.
Consideration of Assistive Devices and Equipment
Selecting appropriate Lofstrand crutches or canes for long-distance walking, and utilizing seat cushions or lumbar supports to reduce fatigue—these are also part of environmental adjustment.
It is important to share the value that "assistive devices are not a sign of weakness," but rather "tools to enable participation" with the users.
Identifying Rest Points
It is also important to know where you can take breaks on the way to the stadium. Locations of benches, convenience stores, and cafes—the peace of mind that "there is a place to rest if I get tired" encourages action.

Understanding "Sport Characteristics" Changes Rehabilitation—this is common knowledge in the world of sports rehabilitation, but the same concept can be applied to daily life rehabilitation. A program designed by a therapist who understands the "characteristics of the sport of soccer spectating" is fundamentally different from simple functional training.
Next time, we will face a different challenge when the goal is "returning to live concerts and festivals"—the issues of crowds and prolonged standing.
