The 11-inch iPad might be the final destination
The history of iPad sizes and the pursuit of the "perfect fit"
The iPad as a device has
naturally integrated itself into my life and work before I knew it.
However, choosing the right size is an eternal challenge.
I currently use both an M2 iPad Pro (12.9-inch) and an iPad mini.
(Since this is about the sense of size, I will refer to it as 13-inch.)
And recently, it occurred to me.
"In the end, isn't the 11-inch the most perfect size?"
This is not just a debate about size.
It is a discussion about the balance of
portability, usability, work efficiency, and immersion.
13-inch and mini—
What I see because I have experienced both extremes
The 13-inch iPad is the "ultimate iPad"
with its vast screen and high performance.
Work using the Apple Pencil and
multitasking with Split View are overwhelming,
and it even has a presence like a laptop.
On the other hand, the iPad mini
is attractive for its lightness and size that fits perfectly in one hand.
It is perfect for reading in bed, taking quick notes,
and checking social media, blending into daily life.
However, as I continue to use these two extremes,
I gradually start to think.
"Too wide and it's heavy. Too light and it's unsatisfying... Was the 11-inch just right?"
The golden ratio of "lightness and spaciousness" provided by the 11-inch iPad
The shock I felt when I held the latest 11-inch iPad Pro (especially the M4 model)
is something I still remember clearly.
"It's light... is this really a Pro?"
It weighs only 444-446g and is 5.3mm thick.
Even though it is this thin and light,
the screen is sufficiently wide,
and Split View is comfortable.
Whether it's videos, PDFs, or sketching,
everything “can be handled properly.”
And what's especially important is that
it pairs extremely well with a
“MacBook-integrated workflow.”
Serious work on the MacBook
Light tasks, browsing, and writing with the Apple Pencil on the iPad
In this division of labor, the 11-inch iPad
functions as the “size you'll want to pick up without hesitation.”
It works perfectly.
The pitfall of the Magic Keyboard

However, there are some points to keep in mind.
The moment you attach the Magic Keyboard,
that “thrill of lightness” fades away.
iPad itself: approx. 444g
Magic Keyboard: approx. 579g
Total: approx. 1.02kg (equivalent to a MacBook Air)
In other words, if you use the Magic Keyboard regularly,
there is little point in choosing the 11-inch model for the sake of “lightness.”
If you want to maintain the “casual nature of an iPad,”
it is better to use an external keyboard
or not use one at all.
Even a case starts to feel heavy
I personally don't use a keyboard anymore, but
even a folio-style case is starting to feel heavy.
At this point, “going naked” might be the only option,
I've started to think.
An 11-inch iPad held without a case is incredibly light.
It truly gives you the feeling that
“this is how a tablet should be.”
But, of course, going naked is scary.

There are many concerns, such as the risk of scratches and drops, the Apple Pencil rolling away,
and the camera bump.
The biggest problem is the Apple Pencil falling off or getting lost.
It always tries to escape.
That's why my recommendation is this type of case that keeps the pencil from escaping.
Even so, if you want to enjoy the lightness to the fullest,
there are compromises like the following.
Ultra-thin back cases (PITAKA or SwitchEasy)
Magnetic detachable lightweight stands
Using it bare with a sleeve
By using these tricks, you can achieve a balance of lightness, smart design,
and minimal protection.
Conclusion: It depends on what you are looking for.
If you want lightness × screen size,an 11-inch iPad used nearly bare is the best choice.
If you prioritize functionality × work efficiency, the Magic Keyboard or the large 13-inch model are also options.
However, if you are thinking,
"I want to use my iPad more frequently"
"I want it to fit more naturally into my life"
then,
the final destination might indeed be the 11-inch model.
Since I am currently lacking in emotions,
I am thinking of buying an 11-inch iPad as my third one.
(I'm just buying too many)
