最も典型的なアメリカの都市とはどこか？アメリカ国外の人に尋ねれば、おそらくニューヨーク市と答えるだろう。アメリカそのもののように、大きく、賑やかで、騒がしい。一方、多くのアメリカ人は故郷の州にある小さな町を挙げるだろう。ニューヨークが確かに有名である一方で、多くのアメリカ人はそれをあまりにも国際的すぎると考えるかもしれない。つまり、十分にアメリカ的ではないのだ。

多くのアメリカ人にとって、小さな町はオーセンティックにアメリカ的なものを体現している。理想の町とは、個人経営の小さな店やレストランが並ぶダウンタウンまで徒歩圏内に一戸建て住宅が並ぶ場所だ。

確かにこのイメージはほぼ間違いなく時代遅れだが、ノスタルジックなイメージは現実よりも心に鮮やかに生き続ける。

ミシガン州のベイシティ（Bay City）は典型的なアメリカの小さな町である。ダウンタウンの近くには、1900年代初頭に建てられた美しい古い家々が並ぶ通りがいくつかある。1800年代後半、ベイシティは港町として繁栄し、製材所や造船所の拠点となった。住民は立派な家を建てる余裕があり、100年経った今もそれらの家屋は良好な状態を保っている。驚くべきことに、これらは今も一戸建て住宅として使われている。大都市では、大きな古い家がアパートに分割されるのが一般的である。

ある通りを歩いて、いくつかの家々を眺めた。今はマッキンリー通り (McKinley Avenue)と呼ばれているが、これらの家の大半が建てられた当時は8番街 (8th Street)だった。おそらく、1901年に暗殺されたアメリカ第25代大統領を称えて通り名が変更されたのだろう。

以前にも（投稿34号）ポーチへの愛着について書いたことがある。マッキンリー通り沿いの家々は美しいポーチと精巧な木製装飾を備えている。住宅の詳細（予定価格を含む）を確認するため、いくつかのウェブサイトを参照した。住宅価格は面積や寝室・浴室の数に依存するが、内部のリフォームが大きな影響を与える。キッチンや浴室が近代化された住宅は価値が大幅に上昇する。

強調しておきたいのは、これらは決して豪華な家ではないということだ。ミシガン州の平均住宅価格（2025年末時点）は約27万ドル（4千万円）だから、これらの家の大半はミシガン州の基準ではむしろ安価な部類に入りる。唯一の例外はF号館で、キッチンが最近改装された。ここは1883年にベイシティへ移住したドイツ人移民の家だった。彼は小売業で成功を収め、妻と6人の子供のためにこの家を建てたのだ (動画ツアーがYouTubeに)。

A Typical American Town
 
What is the most quintessential American city? I think that if you ask people outside the U.S., they might say New York City. Like America, it’s big, busy, and loud. In contrast, I think many Americans would mention a smaller town in their home state. While New York is certainly famous, many Americans might consider it too international. In other words, it’s not American enough.

For many Americans, small towns represent that which is authentically American. The ideal town would have single-family homes within walking distance of a downtown full of small, privately-run shops and restaurants.

Yes, this image is almost certainly outdated, but nostalgic images thrive in the heart more vividly than in reality.

Bay City in Michigan is a typical small American town. Near its downtown are several streets with beautiful old homes, all built in the early 1900s. In the late 1800s, Bay City thrived as a port town and was the base for sawmills and shipyards. Residents could afford to build nice homes, and a hundred years later those houses are still in good condition. Surprisingly, these continue to be single-family residences. In larger cities it is common for large old homes to be divided into apartments.

I took a walk down one street to admire some houses. Today it’s called McKinley Avenue, but when most of these houses were built it was 8th Street. Presumably, the street name was changed to honor America’s twenty-fifth president who was assassinated in 1901.

I have written before (post number 34) about my fondness for porches. The houses along McKinley Avenue have beautiful porches and intricate wooden features. I referenced a few websites to check some details about the houses, including estimated house values. The price of a house might depend on its size and the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, but internal remodeling has a big influence. Homes with modernized kitchens and bathrooms can significantly increase in value.

I feel like I need to emphasize that this are not extravagant houses. The average home price in Michigan (at the end of 2025) is about $270,000 (4千万円), so most of these houses are in fact inexpensive by Michigan standards. The one exception is house F where the kitchen was recently remodeled. This was the home of a German immigrant who arrived in Bay City in 1883. He prospered as a retailer and built the house for his wife and six children (a video tour is available on Youtube).
 
On a sunny morning, I enjoyed my stroll around Bay City’s old houses, and I hope you enjoy these photographs.
