In July 2020, as the scorching hot days continued, I felt I could write a story about a murder case that took advantage of the heat, so I started working on this novel. Initially, I sat down at my computer intending to write a short story of about 8,000 characters, but as I added multiple tricks and increased the number of relationships between characters, it became too large to contain, and as a result, it grew to over 120,000 characters, the threshold for a full-length novel, and became the first full-length novel I wrote after defining my own standards.

The content follows a mysterious incident involving an inheritance, but I wrote about the methods used and the conflicts of the people involved. I hope you enjoy the main story, which leads to a murder case and how it is solved.

I have released it as a paperback and e-book on Amazon Kindle. Of course, it is compatible with Kindle Unlimited, so Unlimited members do not need to pay any additional fees. For the paperback, which is a printed book, printing costs are incurred based on the number of pages, so I set the price at almost the limit, but it still ended up being quite different from the e-book version.

Prologue

There was a man who succeeded in doubling the vast assets inherited from his ancestors during his own lifetime. Although he had a family, he lived his life aiming only to increase his assets day by day, barely looking after them. This man never went out to work, nor was he the president of a large company. After studying economics at university, he spent all his energy after graduation as a mere sole proprietor increasing the assets he inherited from his father. Using representatives from real estate companies, banks, and investment firms as if they were his subordinates, he successfully increased his assets at a considerable pace, based on approximately 10 billion yen in real estate and financial assets inherited from his father's generation, while exchanging information with banks, securities companies, and real estate firms daily. In this man's era, it was still mainstream to meet people and obtain information, and it was an era where one often examined and judged the collected information oneself. There were few opportunities to use the internet to gather information like today, and there were factors that allowed him to increase his assets without needing to respond as an organization. In other words, he was the only cost. However, in exchange, most of the man's time was directed toward work, and he had almost no time to look after his family. As a result, the time he spent with his children decreased, and now he regrets having paid a great sacrifice.

He thought of his first child, his eldest son, as his successor and doted on him often when he was small, but he seemed to have few memories of playing with his eldest daughter and second daughter, who were born later, because he could not find the time. Such a man also grows one year older every year. It is inevitable, but his body weakens and declines. And when he recognized his own frailty, he began to think seriously about what would happen after he died. This man was no exception. It is often said that regret comes too late. By the time he realized it, it was already too late, and he had not raised children to whom he could safely entrust the assets he had built himself, which were valuable to him. In particular, the eldest son was just a good person and did not have the capacity to stand above others. He seemed to have inherited his mother's overly quiet personality. However, people change with their environment. This man himself was strictly guided by his father when he was young and was forced to study only to succeed him. He was drilled by his father on everything from how to deal with people and how to use people to how to use money. However, when it became this man's era, that had been replaced by a feeling of not wanting to repeat the same thing. He vividly remembered his childhood, which had too little freedom. He realized this when he noticed the small number of playmates he had and the fact that he had no friends he could call best friends after he grew up. Not wanting his children to have such thoughts, the man naturally began to distance himself from his children. He had many worries because of his assets, but he stubbornly refused to change his way of life. He did not want to involve his children in the work he was doing. He was afraid that his children would show interest in work that makes money from money, and he wanted them to learn in a wider world. The man knew how difficult it was to keep a straight heart, and he knew the pain of not having reliable friends. He also judged that his children would surely be swayed by the power of money. Therefore, he wanted his children to take jobs where they would receive money as a reward for working hard. And he wanted them to expand their network of contacts through such activities. Not wanting to make them walk on the same rails as himself, he dared not let them help with his work. However, that could not be conveyed to his children, and the children gradually began to distrust their father. The children even began to think that their father valued money more than them. And by the time the man was over ninety, his children were all around sixty years old. The eldest son was approaching the age when he would soon start receiving his pension. Since the children themselves were already at an age where they had to think about inheritance for their own children, their distrust of their father, this man, had reached its peak.

Even a man who could be called a dictator could no longer resist his age. So, he examined and organized how to handle the inheritance with the only person he could trust. And finally, he was able to create a will as an official document. The content was surprising, but for the man, it was the result of thinking and considering how to ensure that even the generation of his grandchildren would not have any trouble. I would like to follow the incident that occurred amidst the problems involving money and the various human relationships surrounding the man who struggled with his successor in the passing time.
