Faster than the Zero! The Type 100 Command Reconnaissance Plane, a Master of Evasion
During World War II, the Imperial Japanese Army and the Imperial Japanese Navy were famous for their intense rivalry, clashing over everything from strategy and resource allocation to power. Yet, even the Navy wanted the Army's Type 100 Command Reconnaissance Plane.
The aircraft was even praised by the Americans, who described it as "one of the most beautiful aircraft to serve in World War II". Let's take a look at this incredibly fast aircraft, a master of overwhelming evasion.
■ It was already faster than the Zero at the time of development!
The "100" in Type 100 Command Reconnaissance Plane comes from the same origin as the Zero, the Imperial Year 2600 (1940) when it was officially adopted. You can already feel the sense of rivalry in the Navy choosing "Type Zero" and the Army choosing "Type 100."
The Army's Mitsubishi Type 97 Command Reconnaissance Plane (480–510 km/h) was already deployed and active on the front lines, but less than six months later, the Army ordered Mitsubishi to develop its successor, the Ki-46.
The chief designer was engineer Tomio Kubo (who would become president of Mitsubishi Motors after the war). Since the only requirement was top speed, he was free to design it as he pleased.
It made its first flight in November 1939, recording 540 km/h at that time, which exceeded the top speed of the Zero, though it did not reach the requested 600 km/h. However, due to its excellent stability and the prospect of further performance improvements, it was officially adopted as the Type 100 Command Reconnaissance Plane in September 1940. This was the Type I, and 34 were produced.

By the way, the Type 97 Command Reconnaissance Plane is also famous as the Asahi Shimbun's "Kamikaze" aircraft.
Improvements continued even after its official adoption, and in March 1941, it became the first domestically produced aircraft to break the 600 km/h barrier, recording the first speed over 600 km/h for a Japanese plane. This version was officially adopted in June 1942 and deployed in combat. This was the Type II, which boasts the highest production number of 1,093 units.
For a while after its introduction, the Allied forces had no way to shoot it down. In the Chinese theater and the Burma campaign, it was feared as the "Burma Phantom" because bombers would attack after this aircraft had passed by at high speed on reconnaissance.
From 1943 onwards, powerful fighters that threatened the Type 100, such as the American P-38 and F6F Hellcat, appeared, but it was further improved to increase performance, eventually gaining enough capability to evade the Hellcat's pursuit.
To give you an idea of how fast it was, it was virtually untouchable until 1943.

・Becoming the fastest Japanese military aircraft with the Ki-46-III
In March 1943, it finally recorded 630 km/h. This surpassed the 624 km/h of the Type 4 Fighter "Hayate" (Ki-84), making it the fastest Japanese Army or Navy aircraft put into practical use during the war. This Type III boasted high performance with a speed of 630 km/h, a range of 4,000 km, and a service ceiling of 10,500 meters.
Incidentally, since the Hayate is said to have reached 689 km/h in the US after the war, it is possible that the Type 100 Command Reconnaissance Plane also reached nearly 700 km/h.
At this time, the canopy was extended forward to make it even more streamlined, and this style is considered beautiful by both the Japanese and Americans. However, later wind tunnel experiments revealed that this streamlined canopy was not very effective, and it was returned to its original design.

・Armed and deployed for interception
As the war situation worsened and the possibility of B-29 raids increased, reconnaissance planes were also equipped with defensive gear for the defense of the home islands. Since the fighters still lacked sufficient climbing power and high-altitude performance, expectations were placed on this Type 100 Command Reconnaissance Plane, which had high-altitude capabilities.
Initially, it achieved some results, but as the B-29s changed their tactics from high altitude to low-to-medium altitude and began to be escorted by fighters like the P-51, casualties increased. It was withdrawn from the front lines, handed over to dedicated interceptor fighters, and returned to its original mission. From then on, it became a rare existence among Japanese military aircraft that remained active until the end of the war.

■ An aircraft that became a pioneer of strategic reconnaissance planes
The Type 100 Command Reconnaissance Plane was a unique command reconnaissance aircraft possessed by the Japanese military, and it can be said to be the pioneer of the strategic reconnaissance aircraft that would develop after the war. Modern American aircraft such as the SR-71 and U-2 are well known, but the fact that the Japanese military deployed these types of aircraft ahead of the rest of the world demonstrates the foresight of the Japanese military aviation units.
While normal reconnaissance missions involved photographing enemy aircraft carrier fleets or airfields, the uniqueness of this aircraft lay in its ability to penetrate deeper into enemy territory to investigate production facilities, supply units, and transportation networks to help formulate military strategy.
As such, the danger level is extremely high because it flies into enemy territory where there is no air superiority to take photographs. Since there is a risk of being shot down, it is necessary to escape and return at maximum speed as quickly as possible. Therefore, range was also an important factor.
