REVIEW
Artist Introduction
Born in 1992 in Catalonia, Rosalía is an "unconventional pop star" who fuses pop and hip-hop with a foundation in flamenco. She studied at the Catalonia College of Music, rose to prominence with "Los Ángeles" (2017), and established global acclaim with "El mal querer" (2018). She expanded her peak with "Motomami" (2022), which experimentally updated reggaeton, and is a Grammy and Latin Grammy award winner.
Album Review
Her fourth album, "LUX," is a turning point where she pushes the boundaries between the mainstream and the avant-garde even further following "Motomami." The orchestral scale crafted with the London Symphony Orchestra overlaps with a concept that weaves the "mystery/transformation/spirituality of femininity," guided by female saints, across 14 languages. Her dedication is evident, as she incorporated language learning into the production process, refining everything from the initial translations to the pronunciation herself. It broke records upon release and received high praise.
The sound centers on the depth of choirs and orchestral arrangements, weaving in the plasticity of art pop and the lingering echoes of beats. The entire work is designed with four "Mov." sections that balance tension and release. The sensibilities of Caroline Shaw and El Guincho blend hall reverberation with electronic textures, while the dynamics conducted by Bjarnason pierce through with prayer and sensuality. The contrast between chamber music-like serenity and sudden electronic noise is also striking.
The recommended track "La Perla" features the voice of Yahritza y su Esencia, which carries the scent of the earth, while aria-like string phrases and simple guitar reflect the hardness and delicacy of a "pearl" simultaneously. The heartbeat of the low frequencies turns pain into an embrace. In contrast, "Berghain" welds the shadows of techno and choral harmonies in a multilingual mix of German, English, and Spanish. "Mio Cristo Piange Diamanti" is an aria-derived ecstasy, while in "Memória," she refines sorrow in Portuguese with Carminho. Religious motifs resonate not as dogma, but as an experience of personal mystery.
Overall, "LUX" builds a corridor of light between the opera house and the club. While it rewards careful listening to the entire album, "La Perla" is also an excellent entry point.
