REVIEW
"Blue," the fourth album released by singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell in 1971. It is a work that is a regular in the top 10 of all-time best lists, and there are not a few who call it the greatest masterpiece in history. It could even be called a divine record. When it comes to blue, it is either Picasso's blue or Joni Mitchell's blue. It is also said to be the "turning point and pinnacle of 20th-century popular music."
James Taylor also participated in this work, and one might say it became more popular, or perhaps closer to Carole King. It is an album that can be called the true essence of Joni Mitchell, who had been releasing historical masterpieces almost every year with "Clouds," "The Canyon," and "Blue." With many masterpieces like "Blue," "California," and "A Case of You," every song is of high quality and has a sense of unity; there are no particularly bad songs nor any that stand out as exceptionally better than the rest. Everything is generally wonderful, and because of that, the entire album maintains a level of perfection as if it were a single song. In this work, one is tempted to say that the album is one single song. If I were to force myself to recommend a favorite song from such a work, it would be "River."
It is also fresh in our memory that Ellie Goulding's cover reached number one on the UK charts in 2019. "River" is said to be the second most covered song in the world, a standard among standards. And because new charms of the song are discovered every time a different person sings it, it is easy for creators to arrange, much like pasta or ramen. Since the melody and lyrics are wonderful, it remains "River" no matter who sings it, and it has the versatility to be dyed any color. It is a treasure of humanity that will likely continue to be sung forever.
