(Family conversation K: Wife T: Me)
K: I was talking to R (my second daughter) and I told her, 'I heard your friend A is having a good time with his friends in another class now.'
Then R said, 'Oh, A. He's the kid who wrote such-and-such on LINE before, so...'
When I replied, 'Well, but it seems like A is doing fine now,' she said, 'No way!'
So,
I thought, 'Oh...' and asked R.
'Who told you that, and why are you so sure?'
Then R said, 'Everyone is saying so.'
T: Ah... I see.
K: So I asked her, 'Well, did you see that information that "everyone is saying" with your own eyes? Did you see the actual LINE messages?'
She said, 'No, I didn't.'
But she insisted, 'Everyone is saying so.'
I told her, 'R, you're being swayed by the opinions of others again,' and asked, 'Was A such a bad kid when you were little?'
Then R said, 'Well, he wasn't bad, but he got bad halfway through, right?' And she added, 'But since he wrote something like that, he must be a bad person.'
I thought, 'This is not good,' and...
I said, 'R, how would you feel if someone did the same thing to you?' I told her, 'People make mistakes and sometimes say the wrong things. But if someone takes just that one part of you and labels you as "that kind of person," that's the same as celebrity gossip.'
T: Ah... yeah.
K: When I said that, R just laughed a little to try and brush it off.
(To be continued)
