How kyg from the rock band STAN became #TheManWhoDivines
Hi! Lately, people have been calling me 'kyg is shallow-deep,' and honestly, it feels pretty accurate. kyg here.
(Shallow-deep is short for being both shallow and deep.)
First, for those of you who are new here, let me introduce myself.
I used to write lyrics, compose music, play guitar, and sing in a band called STAN (STAn).
It was something like this ↓
After that, I couldn't make a living from music anymore, so I started working a regular job.
I wondered, 'Can I really handle working a normal job?' but it turned out I actually could.
Work is work, so of course there are things I don't like, but other than that, it's just a steady, uneventful daily routine.
For some reason, that felt very comfortable to me at the time.
However, I had a lot of songs that I hadn't released to the world, and I started to think it might be a waste not to share them.
So, I created the album 'blue,' which was completely self-produced (except for mastering) and recorded entirely at home ↓ (*Currently on sale for 1,000 yen. Please contact me via Twitter @nsikyg, email at nsikyg@gmail.com, etc. if you're interested!)
Here is a blog post where I wrote about that in detail ↓. All the lyrics are also posted on this blog.
'blue' was very well-received considering I made it all by myself, and in fact, it sold better than I expected.
Personally, I felt a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment that I never had during my band days, and I'm really glad I made it.
Now, here is the main topic.
I love music and fortune-telling.
If you are interested in horoscopes, you might hear that and think, "Ah, that's so Pisces."
If you thought that, you're spot on! I am a Pisces.
Pisces are said to be good at dealing with "things that cannot be seen."
Things like "things you don't quite understand" or "vague things," or to put it more simply, "mysterious things."
It might be strange for me to say this myself, but I think that's quite accurate.
I am interested in those kinds of things myself, and above all, I can't truly immerse myself in anything else.
While I was working a normal job, I gradually started to get scared during the process of making "blue."
"Oh no, I had forgotten, but making music is incredibly fun. Working a job provides great stability like money and social insurance, but I can't get truly absorbed in it. It's not that I hate it to death, but I can't imagine myself doing this for the rest of my life... orz"
I agonized over it for about two years.
Even though my heart was elsewhere, the days kept relentlessly rushing in.
Days spent just "getting through" things.
I don't think it was noticeable on the outside, but mentally, I was quite cornered.
In such daily life, music and fortune-telling resonated with me deeply.
How many times have I been encouraged by Miyuki Nakajima's "Fight!" or Eminem's "Lose Yourself" playing from my iPod during my commute?
How many times have I been soothed and inspired by the horoscopes of Yukari Ishii or Shitake that I read with a dazed mind and body after returning home?
Well, it's a word I don't really like to use, but I don't think it's an exaggeration to say I was "saved."
However, there are also things you must be careful about.
That is the fact that "music and fortune-telling cannot change your real-life situation at all."
Just because work or love is difficult, it doesn't mean someone's music or fortune-telling will solve it for you.
Ultimately, the ones who solve it are "me" or "you" yourself.
If used well, music and fortune-telling can definitely make your heart and mind feel more positive, but that is the extent of their effect.
In that sense, music and fortune-telling really are "mysterious things," aren't they?
So,
What did I, who was spending every day worrying like that, finally decide to do?
I made the decision to quit my job.
It is a conclusion I reached after thoroughly examining everything from every possible angle.
To be honest, it's incredibly scary, but strangely, my heart felt at ease.
At ease.
From now on, I plan to focus on fortune-telling, music, and writing activities like this for a while.
Of course, my income will drop drastically, so I'll have to think of some countermeasures, but that will depend on my own efforts.
(Everyone, I am waiting for work offers)
Lastly.
Music is like medicine, and divination is like a weather forecast.
The medicine (music) that should be prescribed differs depending on the symptoms (feelings), but if the right medicine (music) is provided, the mind and body will head toward recovery.
If there is a forecast (divination) in advance about what kind of climate (temperament/luck) it will be, you can prepare, get into the right mindset, and make plans more easily.
I am convinced that music and divination certainly possess such power, and that they are as important to people as food, clothing, and shelter. (That is probably why they have not disappeared since ancient times.)
And I am convinced that such power should be used more appropriately and freely within today's confused society and world.
Right now, I am driven by the energy of those convictions.
Conviction means 'truly believing'.
However, because that feeling is 'invisible,' no one but me knows it.
It is certainly inside me, but others cannot know the truth of it.
That is why I must desperately keep conveying it.
Just because I know it might not get through, I cannot give up.
'I want to tell you, without giving up, that it is okay to give up.'
Whose lyrics were those again???
With that said, I intend to continue writing about various things from time to time, so thank you for your support!
