A House with a Roof
A painting I recently sent out
[A House with a Roof]
size 61cm x 50cm
oil on canvas
A house with a roof?
Isn't that obvious?
Isn't it a house because it has a roof?
You might think so.
Is it really that obvious?
How much can we pay attention to
things that seem obvious?
As we grow old,
I can't do this anymore,
I can't do that anymore,
if you start counting those things, there is no end to it.
Instead of realizing the value of something only after losing it,
count what you have now.
If you lived your days like that,
surely even as you grow old,
your joy would only continue to increase.
Having a roof, having a futon to sleep in, having food, having a cat curled up and sleeping—how special are those simple things?
Where did the wood for this house come from? Who carried it? How did it grow?
When you turn the tap, water comes out, and there is a warm futon; where did that water and those threads come from?
None of these things exist on their own.
Thanks to the overlapping of many lives,
a single space is created.
If you look at it,
miraculously, everything you need is already there.
It protects you from rain, wind, snow, and strong sunlight.
An absolute safe zone.
And you are the only one who can create that.

Ah, I'm tired today.
I was so sleepy, and I spent the whole day just lounging around.
Just as I was about to start reflecting on myself, this painting and these words came to me.
Encouraged by the painting, I will focus on what I was able to do today,
be kind to myself, and go to sleep.
Today was a good day too.
Good night.
