[distance of zen]

Commentary
A successful applicant's work for the Tama Art University Department of Painting, Oil Painting Course transfer examination. This is an excellent piece of contemporary art with a concept that projects the philosophy of Kyudo (Japanese archery) onto sand art, further layering it through video projection.
Artist Statement
The core philosophy of Kyudo is 'Truth + Goodness = Beauty.' 'Truth' is the correct method of shooting, and 'Goodness' is the cultivation of a mind that can always remain calm. 'Beauty' is what emerges when 'Truth' and 'Goodness' become one. For me, maintaining a calm mind is very difficult. I believe that a calm mind means not being swayed by one's environment or mood. It is like a stone, whose state does not change much whether it is frozen or burned. In the world of Kyudo, etiquette and compassion for others are emphasized. It is difficult to treat everyone with a calm mind. It requires training. In other words, the way to reach 'Goodness' is to polish one's own 'stone' and turn it into 'sand.' I think that while a stone is hard and large, sand is small and more compatible. The mass does not change, but the state does.
To improve my inner self, I must reflect. It is a process of measuring the distance between myself and 'Goodness,' and refining myself to get closer to 'Beauty.' A circle is a collection of beginnings and endings, truly the repetition of night and morning, the cycle of all things. When I started studying painting, I practiced drawing circles many times so that I could draw them well. One can see the process of growth from the daily records. Therefore, I decided to measure my calm mind by intuitively drawing a circle every day for 30 days using the same amount of sand. When drawing a circle, it may become distorted or unevenly distributed depending on my psychological state and the state of my mind at that time.
I turned the circles drawn every day for 30 days into a form that can finally be viewed as a single video. The 30 days projected by the projector and the circle of the 31st day drawn on the floor. It is the end of a month, and from here a new month begins again. Has my heart come even a little closer to 'Goodness'?
