I was halfway across the Shijō Bridge when I heard an English voice.
"Excuse me..."
A serious-looking couple stood there, holding a slightly faded paper map. Their faces were tense.
"Is this the right way to Yasaka Shrine?"
The man asked slowly and clearly.
"Yes, just go straight across the bridge—toward Gion," I began to say.
But the woman was already turning the map around and looking confused.
They seemed likely to get lost, even with directions.
"Would you like me to walk with you?" I heard myself say.
The wind across the bridge had a hint of autumn in it.
At first, the couple walked in silence, glancing around nervously.
But once we entered the covered shopping street of Gion, their expressions softened just a little.
In front of a long-established pickles shop, the man stopped and looked at a display of plums.
"Is this pickled… something?"
"Yes, it's ume—pickled plum. Sour, but tasty," I replied.
The woman let out a small giggle.
We arrived at Yasaka Shrine at 4:45 p.m.
I glanced up. “Still time to ring the bell, I hope.”
At the temizuya, the man listened carefully and awkwardly copied my movements,
washing his hands, then rinsing his mouth.
The woman followed quietly.
At the main hall, they both bowed deeply after ringing the bell.
They were more serious than I was.
A stillness filled the air.
We were about to leave when the man spoke again.
"By the way… is Kichi Kichi nearby? We have a 5 p.m. reservation."
…What!?
I turned sharply in surprise.

四条大橋を渡っているとき、英語の声が聞こえた。
「すみません……」
真面目そうなカップルが、少し色あせた紙の地図を持って立っていた。顔はどこか緊張している。
「八坂神社に行くにはこの道で合ってますか？」
男性がゆっくり、はっきりとたずねた。
「はい、まっすぐ行って、橋を渡って……祇園のほうへ」と答えかけたが、
女性がすでに地図をくるくると回しながら困った顔をしていた。
このまま説明だけしても、迷いそうやな――
「よかったら、一緒に行きましょか」
気がつけば、そう言っていた。
橋の風には、どこか秋の気配が混じっていた。
最初、二人は静かに、周囲を見回しながら歩いていた。
けれど、祇園のアーケード街に入った頃から、少しずつ表情がやわらいできた。
老舗の漬物屋の前で男性が足を止め、ショーケースの梅干しを見ながら、
「これ、何かのピクルス……ですか？」
「はい、梅干しです。すっぱいけど、おいしいですよ」と返すと、
女性が小さく笑った。
八坂神社に着いたのは午後4時45分。
「まだ鈴、鳴らせるかな」と思いながら、手水舎へ案内した。
男性は説明を真剣に聞いて、ぎこちなく手を洗い、口をすすいだ。
女性もそっとまねをした。
拝殿では、鈴を鳴らし、二人とも深く頭を下げていた。
――私よりずっと、丁寧にお参りしてはる。
空気が静かに張っていた。
帰ろうとしたとき、彼がふいに口を開いた。
「ところで……キチキチっていうオムライスのお店、ここから近いですか？5時に予約してて……」
……えっ⁉︎
私は思わず、くるっと振り返った。

表現・語法解説
I heard myself say
「自分で言ったと気づく」自然な独り言の表現。無意識に出た言葉を客観視するときによく使う。
had a hint of autumn
「秋の気配がある」＝a hint of ~（〜のかすかな気配）で季節や感情をやわらかく伝える表現。
a serious-looking couple
「真面目そうなカップル」→ -looking は「〜に見える」という形容詞。
awkwardly copied my movements
「ぎこちなく動きをまねた」→ awkwardly（ぎこちなく）＋ copy one's movements（人の動きをまねる）。
temizuya / main hall
神社文化を説明する時、英語でも日本語単語をそのまま使うことが増えている（特にtemizuyaなどは footnote とセットで）。
still time to…「まだ〜する時間がある」→ “There's still time to ring the bell.” など。
