It's okay to interrupt! What is 'full-duplex'?

The biggest surprise is that it now uses a 'full-duplex' mechanism, which allows the AI to continue processing audio even while we are speaking.

Because of this, if you interrupt the AI while it's talking by saying, 'Oh, wait a second, that's...', the AI will properly respond without losing the flow of the conversation. Conversely, while you are stuck for words and thinking, the AI will quietly wait without interrupting you.

Furthermore, it even provides natural backchanneling like 'uh-huh' or 'I see' while you are speaking, making it feel like you are truly talking to a human on the phone.

A 'background AI' handles difficult questions

Previously, when you gave instructions that required a web search, the conversation would stop while the AI processed the request.

However, in GPT-Live, the part responsible for conversation and the part responsible for complex processing are separated. When you ask a difficult question, it is designed to delegate the processing to the latest model running in the background (currently GPT-5.5).

Therefore, even while the AI is searching or reasoning in the background, it keeps the conversation going without interruption.

The default for free users is a slightly lighter model called 'GPT-Live-1 mini,' but you can still fully experience natural full-duplex conversation.

With paid plans like Plus or Pro, you can use the more advanced 'GPT-Live-1,' and you can also choose reasoning modes like 'Medium' or 'High' for deeper thinking.
