What is an HSC?
HSC is a concept proposed by American psychologist Dr. Elaine N. Aron, referring to children who are highly sensitive and react strongly to environmental stimuli.
✔ Does your child exhibit any of these traits?
Startled by loud noises
Takes time to get used to new environments
Highly empathetic to the feelings of other children
Often prefers playing alone
Careful and tries to avoid failure
Perfectionist
Very reactive to insects
Bothered by clothing tags
Cannot wear itchy sweaters or similar items
If these traits sound familiar, your child might be an "HSC."
It does not seem that all of these necessarily apply.
It appears that sometimes they apply, and sometimes they do not.
My child fit quite a few of them. Σ( ̄ロ ̄lll)
The Four Pillars of HSC Traits
According to Dr. Aron, HSCs are characterized by the following four pillars (D.O.E.S. in English).
Trait Description
D (Depth of processing)Thinks deeply about things and observes well
O (Overstimulation)Easily overwhelmed by environmental stimuli
E (Emotional reactivity and Empathy)Strong emotional fluctuations and high empathyS (Sensitivity to subtleties)Ability to notice subtle changes and differences
What can you do as a parent?
There are many things parents can do to support an HSC child.
While every family is different, please read this for reference.
Instead of thinking "sensitivity = bad," accept your child's traits positively
Create a safe environment for them
(a quiet space, time to be alone)When they react sensitively to something, show empathy by saying, "I understand."
Don't try to force changes; respect the child's pace
(It was useless to try to change them lol)Do not tell them too many things at once
(sometimes they can get into a panic-like state)Try not to disturb them when they are concentrating.
(In our house, we set a time limit for them to play)
The future is bright.
HSC children blossom greatly with love and understanding.
HSC children, precisely because they are sensitive,
can demonstrate creative talents that allow them to empathize with people's hearts.
In our house, they are obsessed with drawing (*^-^*)
A parent's gentle gaze and understanding are
the "foundation of security" for that child.
When the parent is gloomy, the child becomes gloomy,
when the parent gets angry, the child gets a stomachache...
when the parent cries, the child also cried.
It took time to get used to it.
But I wrote this here because I wish I could have understood it as soon as possible.
It's not an illness, and as a parent, I didn't know what to do either.
Even when told to accept them,
I couldn't easily accept it.
I cried many times.
It still hasn't been cured, and
it won't be cured.
It seems like something you just live with.
I am now able to think positively, but
it took over a year to get to this point.
To parents who are struggling right now, I wrote this here
in the hope that I could offer even a little bit of empathy.
There are school teachers who don't know about HSC either.
You might have to be prepared for things to be different from other parents.
For the sake of your precious child,
moms and dads, I know it's hard, but I hope this provides some relief.
I am rooting for you.
Let's do our best together.

There are also some that are easy to read in manga format. I read them together with my elementary school child 💗
In my child's case, I was told that HSC is not an illness, so it's something you understand and live with. It might be good to read it with your child when they get a little older 💗 Reading the book made my heart feel a little lighter (^^)
