♦︎24 Silence is a sign of self-protection
"Why aren't you saying anything?"
My child looks down and stays silent when I scold them.
I get even more frustrated when there's no reply.
Are you reflecting on what you did?
Or are you ignoring me?
The next day,
I turned to the teacher at daycare for help.
"Staying silent
is often not an act of defiance."
"They are watching your expression and don't want to be scolded any further."
"They don't know what they should say."
"They feel they have to do things right."
"They feel like they are no good."
"Sometimes they are trying to protect their hearts
with feelings like those."
She continued,
"Rather than saying 'Why won't you talk?',
creating an 'atmosphere where they can talk with peace of mind' comes first."
"That was a surprise, wasn't it?"
"What did you think?"
"Tell me later."
Those words stayed in my heart a little.
The next day,
I changed how I spoke.
"That was a surprise, wasn't it? What did you think?"
After a short pause,
a small voice replied.
It wasn't about making them talk right away,
it was about making them feel safe.
