Greece Travelogue 3 / Tourist Spots in Greece / Delphi
Delphi was the center of the world around 800 to 600 BC!
It is quite high up in the mountains, but people from countries along the Mediterranean coast visited, donated treasures, and sought oracles.
Oracles were super important back then! Everything from politics to war was decided by oracles!
The sphinx in the photo above (located in the Archaeological Museum of Delphi) was also a gift from an island called Naxos.
Across the sea! Over the mountains! Something this huge!? (It is over 2 meters tall)
And it was looking down on people from atop a 10-meter pillar!?
No wonder ancient people who saw it thought, 'Wow!!' and 'The center of the world is amazing!!'
Oracles were heard from the mouths of priestesses who had entered a trance state by inhaling volcanic fumes.
Smoke still rises from the mountainside today, but there is also a theory that they used incense. There is even a tool in the museum described as 'used to inhale smoke with this'.
In the movie '300', they received oracles, and the model for that was this Temple of Apollo in Delphi.
By the way, Apollo is the sun god and a very handsome god, so the evil god setting in '300' is a complete fabrication.

The town of Delphi where the Temple of Apollo is located.
It seems the town was moved along with its residents because the temple was discovered.
Since it is a town for temple tourism, it is a small town with many souvenir shops, cafes, and hotels.
There are day tours from Athens to Delphi, but it also seems nice to stay for a while.
Are the prices of souvenirs like accessories about one-third of those in Athens?
There is a wide variety, so I recommend buying expensive items like accessories and figurines in this town!
