From "Reading" to "Copying".
A single volume that transcends sects quietly stirred my heart.
Sometimes, a book you bought just to keep on a bookshelf ends up never leaving your desk.
That book was "The Essential Sutra Reader: Read Sutras from All Sects" (Supervised by the Abbot of Kyubutsuan).
To be honest, I initially thought it was just a practical reference book.
Jodo Shinshu, Lotus Sutra, Rishukyo, Heart Sutra, Diamond Sutra...
"A convenient book to understand representative sutras of each sect in one volume"
──It was nothing more and nothing less than that.
However, this book was not one to be read, but one to be faced.
Sutras were not "texts to understand the meaning of"
Having started copying sutras with a fountain pen, one thing has become clear.
Sutras are not words to be understood, but sounds and rhythms that soak in through the body.
If you chase the meaning, it is honestly difficult.
It is philosophical, abstract, and far from modern language.
Even so, as you trace each character with a brush (or pen), something mysterious happens.
・Your breathing deepens
・Unnecessary thoughts disappear
・The habit of searching for evaluations or correct answers stops
This is both meditation and, at the same time, a "decluttering of thoughts".
What the sutras, arranged across sects, taught me in return
The greatest value of this book is that while it explains the differences between sects, it does not rank them at all.
Every sect is the same in that they are based on "human weakness," only the "way of salvation" differs.
・Chanting the Nembutsu
・Chanting the Daimoku
・Contemplating emptiness
・Refining wisdom
The methods are different.
But the destination is the same.
When practicing sutra copying, you quietly realize that "competing for correctness is itself a worldly desire."
Why sutra copying now?
In an age of information overload, we have only been training ourselves to "overthink."
But in reality, time spent not thinking is much better for resetting your life.
・You don't need to find answers
・You don't need to seek results
・You don't need to be evaluated
Just write.
Just copy.
This book is the perfect entry point for that.
Summary: This book is not a "religious text" but a "life-deceleration device."
The "Essential Sutra Reader" is not a book for those with strong religious faith.
Rather—
・People who are tired
・People who are chased by words
・People who want to start slowing down their life
It is a book that will quietly take effect for such people.
Reading it is fine, too.
But if possible, I would like you to copy it.
Because sutras are meant to be read not with the head, but with the hands and breath.
