Unofficial Haiku Awards
Good evening, this is Noncha.
Yesterday, the haiku that advanced to the preliminary round of the Minna no Haiku Taikai Izayoi Cup were announced. Did you find any haiku you liked?
Out of 363 entries, 62 were selected.
But it would be a waste to stop there!
And so, I have once again created a private award that has absolutely nothing to do with the main competition: the Unofficial Noncha Award 😆✨
This is an unofficial award that has no relation to or influence on the judging process ✨
I read through the entries once before the deadline,
and after the deadline, I looked through the list of anonymous submissions again
to choose the ones I liked.
My criteria this time might be slightly influenced by the fact that I am currently studying haiku.
Honestly, I would love for everyone to receive an award, but I have chosen based on my personal preferences at this moment.
【My current characteristics】
First, I find myself drawn to the seasonal word. Then, I seem to like haiku with
good rhythm when read aloud. I also find
enjambment interesting, as it seems to create a slightly syncopated rhythm compared to the standard 5-7-5 structure. Also, for those that resonate with my
empathy for the landscape or scene
, I think, 'Ah, I get it,' or 'I see,' or 'That's clever!' Additionally, I chose ones that just felt good. Even if I
might not have understood the intended meaning, by imagining it, I felt like I was getting a glimpse into a new perspective or world
. I looked at the list from top to bottom and bottom to top at different times, so the order is random, but every haiku here is a winner in that moment. ...Because I used these criteria, the list ended up being quite long. I have kept my thoughts on each haiku as concise as possible. If you'd like, I would be happy if you could tell me the meaning of your haiku in the comments. Since this is an unofficial award, please don't feel obligated to leave a thank-you comment if you are busy ^ ^
Thank you for the wonderful works and for the joy of choosing them ✨
Sekizo-san
“Dragonflies flying, a three-lane road on one side”
I like the rhythm of 'a three-lane road on one side'.
Akiko Yamane-san
“fall-fell, fallen leaves, in fall”
Even in English, the rhythm is good. 'in fall' is nice. It's wonderful and stylish ✨
Naeko Shichida-san
“Sweet grapes, as if to peel off a mask”
The resistance of the sweet grapes is cute.
Kando-san
“The harvest moon wanes, the morning breeze of the third day”
It has a pleasant rhythm and word choice that feels very much like a haiku. The morning moon I saw a few days after the full moon was beautiful.

What kind of dream was it? I'd love to know 😊

Shiota Daiki-san
Leaving the crescent moon behind, the tofu seller goes on
Selling tofu even after it has gotten so dark. Pulling a heavy cart filled with water. I felt a story in it, wondering what else you might be carrying on your back besides the crescent moon.
Ayuta-san
Gathering our remaining years together in a vast field of flowers
The scene visible from there is so gentle and warm,
I thought it was wonderful.
Aricchi-san
Even if incomplete, the thirteenth-night moon blows where it will
To someone else, it might look incomplete, but
the thirteenth-night moon is complete as a thirteenth-night moon.
It's still growing, though?
I thought that nonchalant attitude was cool.
Hane no Aki-san
A drained plastic bottle in the mild autumn sunshine

I thought the mild autumn sunshine was lovely.
