KHEMJIRA The Inescapable Curse
I encountered a work that captured my heart and wouldn't let go toward the end of 2025, and after savoring it, I'm writing my thoughts for the first time in a while.
The work is the Thai BL drama 'KHEMJIRA The Inescapable Curse'.
Personally, this was my first Thai work and my first BL work, a 'first-time-for-everything' experience.
Synopsis
Khemjira, a young man who can see ghosts, was born into a family cursed with the fate that 'all males will meet an untimely death before turning 21'.
To protect their son from the curse, his parents gave him the female name 'Khemjira'.
However, as his 21st birthday approaches, the calamities brought by the curse begin to close in.
To escape this curse, he visits the mysterious and charming master Palan—
Brief Thoughts
Above all, the acting, visuals, and chemistry of the cast, starting with the two leads, are superb! Furthermore, every element—the cinematography, music, and cultural background—is high-quality and beautiful. As someone who personally loves reincarnation stories, I was completely immersed in the plot, and even though each episode is fairly long, I never lost focus and binge-watched them one after another.
The main cast is so visually stunning that the scenes hold up even when they're just standing there silently ()
Favorite Scenes
There are too many to list, so I've steeled myself to pick just a few 📝

It was a moment of such persuasion that my expectations and anxieties—like 'Oh, is this drama interesting?' or 'No, it's too early to judge...'-turned into conviction. As revealed in later episodes, Jet said he wears sunglasses because anyone, regardless of age or gender, falls for him when they make eye contact, so why did he take them off first thing when he met Khem? Lol
By the way, the final push that confirmed this as a god-tier drama is this from episode 2 👇

At this point, Palan is in his tsundere phase, so he uses sorcery to make sure he doesn't wake up, and then proceeds to apply medicine only to Khem—a move that left viewers melting, wondering if he wanted to hide it or have it found out (as a result, it was found out immediately, which is cute).

The scene where Palan applies ointment (he applies medicine a lot) to Khem's shoulder after he was hit by a stone thrown by local thugs (who are they?) felt so real, transcending mere acting, as Palan's expressions and breathing conveyed the turmoil in his heart. It was also thrilling to see Palan, who usually keeps himself in check, lose his reason and approach Khem. And the wonderful OST by Keng that suddenly starts playing... (The Official MV is a must-listen!!)

Palan, what kind of look are you giving Khem? It was written all over your face: 'craving' lol
The scene afterward where Prim comes to the house and Khem treats Palan coldly made me squirm (lol).
I also loved the gentle expression on Palan's face when he noticed Khem's slight physical changes and made him something like herbal tea.
The scene where they move from a state of mutual unrequited love to clearly expressing their feelings and connecting with each other goes without saying.

Khem has begun to prepare for the possibility that his life might end, but Palan has decided that he will never let Khem go in this lifetime... It's a happy yet sad and beautiful scene where their emotions are intertwined.
Among them, there is a line I can't forget. In episode 2, when there was a marital dispute in the village, Palan said, 'There are things that cannot be solved by love alone,' but in this scene, when Khem asked, 'Is this a mistake?', the answer he gave was 'If there is love, it is not necessarily a mistake,' and I cried... Khem's love melted Palan's heart... And the contrast between their happy time and the depressing developments that follow is just too painful...

A fleeting expression filled with sorrow as he realizes his own end.
The expression of relief mixed with resignation when Palan rushes to Khem's side.
The manic expression when Lamphun possesses Khem.
The provocative expression of Jet (played by Namping) impersonating Khem.
...And then, he suddenly flashes an angelic smile; his range of expressions is truly something else. (I mean that as a compliment.)

Palan saw Khem's end in a prophetic dream. When he asked the spirit in the cave why it was helping him, the reason lay in his past life's actions.
Because the god sensed the thirst for love within Palan, he was destined to be reincarnated as a human in his future life. Thinking about how Khem's soul had always faced cruel partings whenever they met, just as Pawat was separated from Khemika, made me want to cry out, 'God, that's not what we agreed on!' But I'm so glad they were able to walk a long life together safely in this lifetime, and seeing Palan, whose love for Khem is overflowing after this episode, makes my heart flutter.
(Watching the NC scene in episode 12 while thinking, '...this expression is because he harbors a thirst for love in his heart...' still hits different.)

Palan's expression when Khem gave his answer was truly wonderful! Joy welled up from the bottom of his heart; is this the kind of expression people make when the person they love is right in front of them...
I won't go into detail about the NC scene, but unlike episode 8, it was full-power happiness, and it made me happy too.
There are still so many points I want to pick up on, but I'll stop here for now. This is completely unrelated, but I found it subtly amusing that no matter where Khem went throughout the series, he was always properly tucked into bed. He's such a princess. lol
God-tier Casting
It's common knowledge that the casting is perfect, but I just have to talk about it!
*Where names are underlined, you can click to go to their Instagram account!

Keng (Keng)
(Harit Buayoi)
The shock I felt when I first saw him was immense; he is the most handsome human in this world. A real-life sculpture. His eyes are made of jewels. Contrary to his dignified appearance, he sometimes acts a bit strange, but he's a swamp-like handsome man who delivers when it counts. Plus, he's even good at singing. Personally, I also really like it when he does modeling work.

Namping (Namping)
(Napatsakorn Pingmuang)
He is overwhelmingly a princess. His visuals are top-tier 24/7. Professionally cute. A soft, chewy mochi. He's so cute it's agonizing. Despite having such a cute face, he's 180cm tall, and his waist is higher than Mount Fuji. The gap between his cute face and the elegance and high intelligence glimpsed in interviews is the most extreme in the world.

TleFirstOne (Sorry for grouping them together)
These two are also from DMD, just like KengNamping. Above all, both of them have beautiful faces. And they are a great singing duo! Watching events, the sweet atmosphere where Tle looks at FirstOne's innocence with gentle eyes is impressive. 'Strong side couples' is the formula for a successful drama, after all... Actually, it was destiny that these four were chosen for the singing mission in DMD Friendship...

Green
This drama really couldn't be talked about without this person! The ghost role played by this stunning beauty was too scary! Until quite late in the series, the reason 'why Lamphun continued to hold such a strong grudge against Khem's soul' wasn't revealed, so she was just an object of terror, but the episode where that reason was revealed was just so painful, combined with Green's passionate performance (;;). I understand the feeling of hating the whole clan, but please stop cursing them into the next life~~~ (Though leaving the judgment to the child in that scene was what really pissed me off the most...)
Also, the casting for the present life and the past life (and their younger selves) is genius! Khem, Jet, and Chan look too much alike even though they are different genders (I love the face type of Khemika's Janistar ). Among the DMD members, Patji who played Palan's student days, and Pung who played Pawat's younger brother Chayot in Palan's past life, also had an atmosphere somewhat similar to Keng, so there was no sense of discomfort at all.
A huge bonus for the casting staff, please!

The best OST
It would be incredibly long if I talked about it all, so I'll just introduce them...
First, the MV for the four main cast members!
And the pair MV that visualizes happiness
Furthermore, the MV for the four of them, if heaven exists, it must be here
And the opening is an absolute must-watch
There's still more, so if you're interested, search on YouTube🔍
I also made a KHEMJIRA playlist, so please feel free to immerse yourself in it🕯️
*I just searched diligently using a translation function, so there might be mistakes
The preciousness of KengNamping
I started out just because I liked their faces, but it turned out their inner selves were so wonderful that before I knew it, I couldn't help but support them and ended up writing this rambling text. It's the greatest joy for an otaku. The two of them have contrasting charms in both visuals and personality; they are stars in their own right, but when they are together, the atmosphere relaxes and their radiance multiplies many times over. It's not so much that they complement each other, but rather that they are each other's sun and moon... that's the impression I get (I hope that makes sense).
In Thailand, it seems that actors who appear in BL works don't just say goodbye after co-starring in one project; they continue to work as partners on other projects and participate in PR events together. It seems the two of them are called "KengNamping." It's cute just putting their names together. While digging through various videos, a clip of the two of them blushing while pulling on a ribbon came up, and I ended up watching DMD Friendship (the original) and successfully became a fan of the whole agency.

I only recently learned about KengNamping, and I have to rely on translating Thai to get information from social media, but even as a novice, it's impossible not to see that the two of them are being attacked from various angles and are hurting. Perhaps people are jealous of their intelligence and the strong core beliefs they hold, and that's why they hurl heartless words at them, but that is absolutely no excuse for harassment. I truly respect them for stepping into this thorny industry with such strong resolve and continuing to fight. Seeing the two of them overcome hardships together and being each other's safe haven, I realize that building such a strong bond is very rare and special, and I'm really happy that they met (who am I to say this? lol). In the extreme, I just want them to receive only love and happiness and keep smiling for the rest of their lives... I know it must be tough with more and more artists joining, but first, I'm waiting for the KHEMJIRA Special Episode, DMD!! lol
Finally
This was my first time watching a Thai production, and the first thing I thought was that the beauty of the colors released from Thailand's cultural assets was wonderful. What you see might not be everything, but this work made me want to visit Thailand, and I'm currently planning a trip there. It's the same thing I felt when I first watched a Korean drama, but being able to take an interest in a country's culture through its works made me feel the power of entertainment once again.
BL works have been increasing quite a bit in Japan recently, but personally, I honestly still had some resistance to the BL genre. Even so, I was lured in by their visuals and watched it. I think the essence is just that they fell in love with someone, and that person happened to be the same gender (of course, I don't think reality is just about such pure emotions...).
Since Thailand is the only country in Southeast Asia that recognizes same-sex marriage, I also feel a strong determination from DMD to break down the concept of "how men/women should be" through their works. I'm sure it's not hard to imagine that in reality, even in Thailand, homosexuality is not as accepted as it is in dramas, but I also support the production side's belief that they can change the world's way of thinking through the power of entertainment, and that they believe they can change it!
Also, I want to promote them more, so I want them to be available on subscription streaming services soon. They appeared on Netflix for a moment and then disappeared. (Geo-blocking f**k)
There are many other works I'm curious about (other than DMD, Burnout Syndrome looks crazy, what's with Gun's cuteness?)
Even U-NEXT doesn't seem to have picked up as many Thai works as Korean ones yet, and I hope that not just this work, but Thai works in general will become more familiar in Japan.
Bonus
Broadcasting on Nippon TV Plus starting Monday, 5/18 at 23:00!
Once this broadcast ends, I want it back on Netflix!!
